Raipur: Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai celebrated Raksha Bandhan at his residence, where women from different sections of society tied rakhis on his wrist and extended their blessings. CM Sai said the affection and trust of women inspire the government to work more strongly for their welfare.

CM Sai Highlights Women’s Empowerment

The Chief Minister said Raksha Bandhan represents the bond of affection, trust and responsibility between brothers and sisters. He described the participation of women from different communities and organisations as a special moment.

Women journalists, self-help groups, Lakhpati Didis, Drone Didis, e-rickshaw workers, differently abled women and members of various social organisations participated in the celebration.

Mahtari Vandan Scheme Supports Women

CM Sai said women’s economic empowerment remains a major priority of the state government. Under the Mahtari Vandan Yojana, around 68 lakh women receive ₹1,000 every month.

He said the 31st instalment, amounting to more than ₹631 crore, was transferred to beneficiaries’ bank accounts on August 25, ahead of Raksha Bandhan. According to the Chief Minister, women use the assistance for household needs, children’s education, healthcare, savings and livelihood activities.

The state government has also described the scheme as an important tool for improving women’s financial independence and strengthening their role in household decisions.

Women’s Role in Local Leadership

CM Sai also highlighted the growing participation of women in rural leadership and economic activities. He said women associated with self-help groups, Lakhpati Didi initiatives, drone services, e-rickshaws and other livelihood activities are creating new examples of empowerment.

He also pointed to 50 per cent reservation for women in panchayat elections, saying it has strengthened women’s participation in local leadership.

Rakhi Tied to Security Personnel

The Chief Minister also recalled the ‘Sneh Ki Dor’ programme in Raipur, where women from self-help groups, differently abled communities and families of martyred soldiers tied rakhis to around 1,600 personnel from forces including the CRPF, BSF, CISF and ITBP.

CM Sai said remembering security personnel who remain away from their families during festivals is a way of expressing gratitude for their service.

Focus on Financial Independence

CM Sai said the Mahtari Vandan Yojana goes beyond monthly financial assistance by helping strengthen women’s confidence and ability to manage their own needs.

The government’s wider women-focused approach includes financial support, livelihood opportunities, entrepreneurship, local leadership and access to welfare schemes. The emphasis on these areas reflects a broader effort to improve women’s economic participation and self-reliance in Chhattisgarh.
