MIDHANI Achieves Milestone in Indigenous Development of Superalloys and Titanium Alloys for HAL Aero Engines

MIDHANI Completes Material-Level Development and Certification of Critical Alloys, Enhances Production Facilities, Strengthening India’s Self-Reliance in Advanced Aerospace Materials
Indian Masterminds Stories

New Delhi: Mishra Dhatu Nigam Limited (MIDHANI) has reached a significant milestone in the indigenous development and certification of critical superalloys, titanium alloys, and special steels for advanced aero engines being developed for Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), Koraput. The achievement marks a major step toward self-reliance in the production of performance-critical materials for India’s aerospace sector.

Material Development and Certification Progress

According to the company, MIDHANI has completed material-level development for 50 percent of the total alloy systems required for the HAL aero engine programme. Of these, 80 percent have already been certified, while the remaining alloys are in advanced stages of development. In a key development, the Chief Executive of the Centre for Military Airworthiness & Certification (CEMILAC) handed over a certificate to MIDHANI’s Chairman and Managing Director, granting clearance for series production of these alloys for manufacturing airworthy aero engine components.

Showcasing Advanced Materials

MIDHANI showcased its successfully developed mill forms and forgings of various nickel-based superalloys, titanium alloys, and special steels. These materials are essential for fabricating high-performance components in modern aero engines, which demand exceptional strength, heat resistance, and reliability under extreme operating conditions.

Upgrading Production Capabilities

Over the past year, MIDHANI has upgraded its state-of-the-art production facilities to meet the requirements of advanced aerospace manufacturing. Key enhancements include the commissioning of a new titanium shop to boost airworthy titanium alloy production capacity, installation of a 6,000-tonne near-isothermal forge press, and revamping of Vacuum Induction Melting furnaces to support larger remelt stock and master heats for single-crystal superalloys. The Chief Executive of CEMILAC lauded MIDHANI’s fast-track approach to indigenisation and certification, noting that accelerated material testing has ensured timely readiness for aero engine projects.

Contribution to India’s Aerospace Self-Reliance

MIDHANI’s efforts significantly contribute to India’s drive for self-reliance in advanced materials for aerospace applications. By developing, certifying, and producing critical alloys domestically, the company reduces dependence on imports and strengthens the supply chain for strategic defence and aerospace programs.

About MIDHANI

Mishra Dhatu Nigam Limited (MIDHANI), headquartered in Hyderabad, is India’s premier metallurgical company specializing in high-performance alloys and special steels for aerospace, defence, and strategic applications. With state-of-the-art manufacturing capabilities and a focus on innovation, MIDHANI continues to support India’s self-reliance in critical materials while delivering high-quality solutions for complex engineering challenges.
