New Delhi: The Ministry of Coal, Government of India, has made significant progress in strengthening and modernising the country’s coal transportation infrastructure through its First Mile Connectivity (FMC) initiative. Out of a total of 139 FMC projects launched nationwide, 65 projects with a combined capacity of 552 million tonnes have already been commissioned, marking a major milestone in improving efficiency and sustainability in the coal supply chain.
Transforming Coal Logistics Through Technology
The FMC projects aim to create seamless and mechanised coal evacuation systems from mines to railways, reducing dependence on road transport and minimising manual handling. By integrating advanced infrastructure and digital technologies, these projects are designed to streamline operations and ensure faster, more reliable coal movement.

Key Benefits of the FMC Initiative
According to the Ministry of Coal, the FMC projects deliver multiple operational and environmental benefits. These include faster railway wagon turnaround times, leading to improved logistics efficiency and reduced congestion. The shift away from road transportation significantly cuts down vehicular emissions, contributing to cleaner and more sustainable energy logistics.
The initiative also incorporates integrated digital monitoring systems that enable real-time tracking and greater transparency in coal loading operations. Reduced manual handling helps preserve coal quality and minimises transit losses, further enhancing overall efficiency.
Environmental and Public Health Impact
By promoting mechanised handling and rail-based transportation, the FMC initiative supports environmental protection and improved public health outcomes. Lower emissions and reduced dust generation contribute to cleaner air in and around mining regions. The projects align with India’s broader commitment to sustainable development and the national goal of achieving net-zero emissions.
Government’s Vision for Sustainable Energy Infrastructure
The Ministry of Coal stated that the FMC programme reflects the Government of India’s strategic vision, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, to modernise energy infrastructure through technology-driven solutions. The initiative underscores a balanced approach that combines energy security with environmental responsibility.
Towards a More Efficient Coal Sector
With 74 FMC projects still under various stages of implementation, the Ministry aims to further expand mechanised coal evacuation capacity in the coming years. Once fully completed, the FMC network is expected to transform India’s coal transportation system into a more efficient, transparent and sustainable model, strengthening the backbone of the country’s energy sector while reducing its carbon footprint.
