On the occasion of International Women’s Day, the Legislative Department, Ministry of Law & Justice, is releasing a significant publication titled “The Life and Contributions of the Women Members of the Constituent Assembly.” This book serves as a tribute to fifteen remarkable women whose pivotal role in drafting India’s Constitution has often been overlooked in mainstream historical and legal narratives.

These pioneering women—lawyers, social reformers, and freedom fighters—defied structural barriers in a male-dominated political sphere to shape key constitutional debates. Their contributions laid the foundation for fundamental rights, gender equality, social justice, and democratic governance. This publication aims to bridge historical gaps by offering an in-depth analysis of their speeches, debates, and legislative interventions.
The book traces the evolution of women’s constitutional aspirations from the establishment of the Women’s Indian Association in 1917 to their role in independent India. It highlights the contributions of stalwarts like Ms. Ammu Swaminathan, who championed gender equality, Ms. Begum Qudsia Aizaz Rasul, a strong advocate for secularism, and Ms. Dakshayani Velayudhan, the first Dalit woman in the Assembly, who fought against untouchability. Other eminent figures such as Ms. Sarojini Naidu, Ms. Sucheta Kripalani, and Ms. Rajkumari Amrit Kaur played vital roles in shaping India’s democratic ethos.
With its detailed profiles and a compilation of key Assembly debates, this book is an essential resource for scholars, historians, and citizens interested in India’s constitutional history and the indispensable role women played in its formation.
