Union Minister of State for Defence Mr. Sanjay Seth led a high-level Indian delegation to Madagascar on an official visit from June 25 to 27, 2025, marking a significant step in strengthening Indo-Malagasy bilateral relations. The visit coincided with the 65th anniversary celebrations of Madagascar’s Independence Day and the formation of its Armed Forces.

Representing India at the commemorative events in Antananarivo, Mr. Seth reaffirmed India’s commitment to supporting Madagascar as a close Indian Ocean neighbour and strategic partner. He participated in official ceremonies marking the anniversary and engaged in high-level discussions with Malagasy leadership.
Bilateral Defence Dialogue
Mr. Sanjay Seth held a bilateral meeting with Madagascar’s Minister of Armed Forces, Lt. Gen. Sahivelo Lala Monja Delphin. The leaders reviewed ongoing defence cooperation and explored avenues to further deepen collaboration, particularly in maritime security and capacity building of the Malagasy defence forces. The discussions reflected the mutual intent to enhance security cooperation in the Indian Ocean Region.

During the visit, Mr. Seth also called on the Prime Minister of Madagascar, Mr. Christian Ntsay. He conveyed warm greetings from Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi on the historic occasion of the 65th anniversary of Madagascar’s independence. The meeting highlighted the shared aspirations of both nations to work closely in areas of mutual interest and development.
Engagement with Indian Diaspora
Raksha Rajya Mantri attended a special Indian Community Reception hosted by the Indian Embassy in Antananarivo. Interacting with the Indian diaspora, he briefed them on recent developments in India, focusing on the country’s economic transformation and global ascent under the dynamic leadership of Prime Minister Modi. He praised the Indian community for acting as a bridge of friendship and cooperation between the two countries.

India and Madagascar, as neighbours in the Indian Ocean Region, share historical ties and people-to-people linkages. The visit of Mr. Seth reaffirmed India’s commitment to enhancing its strategic partnership with Madagascar, aligning with India’s MAHASAGAR vision — Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security and Growth Across Regions. The initiative underscores India’s approach to foster inclusive growth and regional security through close collaboration with its maritime neighbours.
