Bhopal: In a major boost to Ayurveda education in Madhya Pradesh, the state government has received budget approval to establish eight new Ayurveda medical colleges under the National AYUSH Mission, with a total sanctioned amount of Rs 490 crore. The initiative aims to strengthen the state’s healthcare system and promote traditional medicine education.
The plan is expected to receive cabinet approval shortly, paving the way for the construction and operationalization of these colleges across the state.
Locations and Phased Approvals
According to the AYUSH Department, the eight colleges will be opened in two phases:
- Phase 1 (2024–25): Narmadapuram, Sagar, Balaghat, Shahdol, and Morena
- Phase 2 (2025–26): Jhabua and Shajapur
The phased approval ensures structured implementation and timely allocation of funds for infrastructure development, faculty recruitment, and academic activities.
Construction Managed by Madhya Pradesh Building Development Corporation
The Madhya Pradesh Building Development Corporation (MPBDC) will oversee the construction of all eight institutions. The government will provide Rs 70 crore per college to support the development of state-of-the-art infrastructure, including classrooms, laboratories, libraries, and hostels.
Officials confirmed that posts for five colleges have already been approved, while the proposal for the remaining three colleges will soon be placed before the state cabinet for final approval.
Timeline and Academic Goals
AYUSH mission officials stated that the aim is to start academic sessions by 2028 in all eight colleges. The new institutions are expected to:
- Strengthen the Ayurveda medical education system in Madhya Pradesh
- Produce a skilled workforce of Ayurveda doctors and practitioners
- Enhance access to traditional medicine education across rural and urban regions
The initiative also aligns with the government’s broader goal of promoting integrated healthcare solutions and supporting India’s rich traditional medical heritage.
Strategic Importance
The establishment of these colleges is expected to boost the state’s healthcare infrastructure, create employment opportunities, and enhance research and innovation in Ayurveda and traditional medicine. By expanding Ayurveda education to underserved districts, Madhya Pradesh aims to strengthen its public health system while fostering interest in alternative medicine among the youth.
