Bhopal: Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav on Friday paid tribute to tribal freedom fighters Raja Shankar Shah and Kunwar Raghunath Shah in Jabalpur and said the state government will extend full support to initiatives that bring the lives and contributions of tribal heroes before a wider audience.

Addressing the programme organised to mark the martyrdom day of Raja Shankar Shah and Kunwar Raghunath Shah, the Chief Minister said films based on the lives of tribal personalities and martyrs should be made so that their contribution reaches future generations.

Yadav also highlighted efforts to include tribal leaders in educational curricula and cited initiatives named after prominent tribal figures as part of the state government’s efforts to highlight Madhya Pradesh’s historical heritage.

CM Pays Tribute to Shankar Shah and Raghunath Shah

The Chief Minister garlanded the statues of Raja Shankar Shah and Kunwar Raghunath Shah and paid tribute to the father-son duo.

Describing the occasion as significant, Yadav recalled their role during the period of British rule and said their resistance had become an important part of the region’s history.

He particularly highlighted Raja Shankar Shah’s use of songs and poetry to spread the message of freedom before his martyrdom during the period associated with the 1857 uprising.

According to the Chief Minister, Shankar Shah used writing and poetry as instruments of resistance and combined his ideas of freedom with his cultural and religious traditions.

‘They Used the Pen Like a Sword’

Yadav said tribal leaders played an important role in creating awareness among people during the freedom struggle.

He described Raja Shankar Shah’s songs as a source of inspiration among the people and said his son Raghunath Shah continued his father’s efforts.

The Chief Minister recalled that the British eventually arrested the two leaders and sought their submission. He said the two refused to surrender their principles and chose to face death rather than accept the conditions imposed on them.

Yadav said their resistance demonstrated their determination and helped preserve the memory of tribal participation in India’s freedom movement.

Government to Support Films on Tribal Heroes

A key announcement at the Jabalpur programme was the state government’s willingness to support films based on the lives of tribal heroes and martyrs.

Yadav said the government would provide support for such initiatives and other efforts aimed at bringing the state’s historical heritage before the public.

The announcement adds another medium to the government’s efforts to increase awareness about tribal personalities. Along with educational content, films and other forms of storytelling can bring historical figures to audiences beyond traditional textbooks.

The Chief Minister also referred to the inclusion of tribal personalities in the curriculum as part of the state’s efforts to ensure that younger generations learn about their contributions.

Tribal Leaders and Educational Recognition

Yadav said figures such as Raja Bhabhut Singh, Raja Shankar Shah-Raghunath Shah and Rani Durgavati have been included in educational curricula so that students can learn about their lives and contributions.

He said bringing the history of such personalities into mainstream education would help future generations understand their role in the state’s past.

The Chief Minister also referred to institutions and initiatives associated with tribal leaders. He said the government is working to highlight Madhya Pradesh’s historical and cultural legacy through such measures.

Reference to Rani Durgavati and Tantya Mama

During his address, Yadav mentioned several initiatives associated with prominent tribal personalities.

He said the state government would construct Rani Durgavati Lok and referred to the establishment of a university in Khargone named after Krantisurya Tantya Mama.

He also mentioned the university initiative in Sagar associated with Rani Avantibai Lodhi, highlighting these measures as efforts to preserve and promote the legacy of tribal and historical figures.

The Chief Minister said bringing the state’s historical heritage before the public is an important responsibility of the government.

PM Modi’s Sickle Cell Initiative Mentioned

Yadav also referred to work being undertaken on sickle cell disease among tribal communities.

He said Prime Minister Narendra Modi has led efforts to expand awareness and interventions related to sickle cell disease, particularly in states with significant tribal populations such as Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat and Rajasthan.

The Chief Minister also acknowledged the role of Madhya Pradesh Governor Mangubhai Patel in this area.

The reference to sickle cell prevention linked the commemoration programme with ongoing public-health efforts among tribal communities.

Keeping Tribal History Alive

The commemoration of Raja Shankar Shah and Kunwar Raghunath Shah was used to underline the importance of preserving the history of tribal participation in India’s freedom movement.

The government’s proposed support for films, along with the inclusion of tribal personalities in educational curricula and initiatives named after them, reflects an effort to make their stories more accessible to younger generations.

For Madhya Pradesh, the focus on tribal history also connects cultural recognition with education and public awareness. The Jabalpur programme therefore served not only as a tribute to two freedom fighters but also as a platform to discuss ways of preserving and presenting the state’s tribal heritage.
