Bhubaneswar/Koraput: National Aluminium Company Limited (NALCO) has achieved a major milestone towards operationalising its captive Pottangi Bauxite Mines in Koraput district of Odisha with the signing of a government land lease deed.

The agreement covers land required for two critical infrastructure components — the Overland Conveyor Corridor and the Water Intake Facility. The completion of the land lease process marks an important phase in the land-related formalities required for the development and operationalisation of the Pottangi bauxite mines.

NALCO Signs Government Land Lease Deed

The government land lease deed was signed by Amarendra Kumar Mishra, Executive Director (Mines & Refinery), NALCO, and Harischandra Rout, Chief General Manager (Land), IDCO. The agreement was signed in the presence of Jagdish Arora, Director (Projects & Technical), NALCO.

Officials from the local administration were also present, including Pottangi Tehsildar Debendra Bahadur Singh Dharua and Semiliguda Tehsildar Debabrata Karati.

The execution of the lease deed completes a key stage in the land acquisition process for the Pottangi Bauxite Mines project.

Key Infrastructure for Pottangi Bauxite Mines

The land covered under the lease will support the development of the:

  • Overland Conveyor Corridor
  • Water Intake Facility

Both facilities are important infrastructure components required for the operationalisation of the captive mines.

The completion of the land lease formalities is expected to enable NALCO to proceed with further project-related activities towards commissioning the Pottangi mines.

Pottangi Mines to Strengthen NALCO’s Raw Material Supply

The Pottangi Bauxite Mines are being developed as a captive source of bauxite for NALCO.

The mines are expected to strengthen the company’s raw-material supply chain and provide sustained bauxite availability for its alumina refinery operations. A senior NALCO official said the company has obtained a mining lease for 111 million tonnes of bauxite from the Pottangi mines.

The latest development is expected to pave the way for further work towards commissioning the captive mines, which are considered important for ensuring a sustained supply of bauxite to NALCO’s alumina refinery.

Land Acquisition Process Reaches Key Stage

Officials said the signing of the government land lease deed marks the completion of an important phase of the land acquisition process for the project.

The local administration has extended the required support for completing the land-related formalities, considering the importance of the Pottangi project.

With the lease deed now executed, NALCO can advance work on the infrastructure required for the mines, including the conveyor corridor and water intake facility.

Pottangi Project’s Importance for NALCO

The development of the Pottangi Bauxite Mines is strategically important for NALCO as the company seeks to secure a reliable captive source of raw material.

The availability of captive bauxite is expected to support the company’s alumina refinery operations and strengthen its overall raw material security.

The completion of the latest land lease milestone therefore represents an important step towards bringing the Pottangi mines into operation.
