Mumbai: Bank of Baroda (BoB), India’s International Bank, has launched UPI Global Reverse Acceptance, enabling international tourists, overseas Indians and eligible users of foreign wallets and payment applications to make seamless QR-based merchant payments across India.

The new facility allows visitors from participating countries to use their existing home-country banking or payment applications to scan Bank of Baroda UPI QR codes and complete payments at participating merchants.

The initiative expands international QR payment acceptance across Bank of Baroda’s merchant network while giving its merchants access to a wider customer base.

Bank of Baroda Expands International UPI QR Acceptance

UPI Global Reverse Acceptance enables cross-border Person-to-Merchant (P2M) transactions for international visitors in India.

The facility is aligned with NPCI International’s vision of global interoperability for digital payments and supports visitors from countries participating in NPCI International’s Global Payments ecosystem.

Major international payment corridors covered under the initiative include:

  • Singapore
  • UAE
  • Nepal
  • Bhutan
  • Mauritius
  • Sri Lanka
  • USA
  • Qatar
  • France
  • Other eligible participating countries

International Visitors Can Pay Using Home-Country Apps

Under the new facility, international visitors do not need to rely solely on cash or exchange foreign currency for every merchant transaction.

They can simply scan a Bank of Baroda UPI QR code using their familiar home-country banking or payment application and complete the transaction.

This provides travelers with a more convenient digital payment experience while visiting India.

The facility is expected to be particularly useful for international tourists and overseas Indians who want to make everyday merchant payments without having to change their usual payment habits.

Wider Customer Base for Bank of Baroda Merchants

The initiative is also aimed at benefiting Bank of Baroda’s merchant network.

By accepting payments from eligible international banking and payment applications, merchants can potentially serve a broader customer base that includes visitors from overseas.

The expansion of international QR payment acceptance also strengthens Bank of Baroda’s merchant acquiring business and supports the growth of cross-border digital transactions.

Bank of Baroda Highlights Global Digital Payments Push

Sanjay Mudaliar, Executive Director, Bank of Baroda, said the launch of UPI Global Reverse Acceptance is an important step towards making digital payments more accessible across borders.

He said the facility allows international visitors to make merchant payments through payment applications they already use and are familiar with, while also creating new business opportunities for Bank of Baroda’s merchants.

Mudaliar added that the initiative strengthens the bank’s merchant acquiring franchise and reflects its focus on innovation and building a globally interoperable digital payments ecosystem.

UPI Global Reverse Acceptance Supports Digital India

Bank of Baroda said the initiative contributes to the Government of India’s Digital India vision by promoting innovative and globally interoperable digital payment solutions.

The facility brings India’s UPI-based merchant payment infrastructure closer to international visitors by enabling cross-border P2M payments through participating foreign payment applications.

For travelers, the service can reduce dependence on physical cash and simplify payments during their stay in India.

How UPI Global Reverse Acceptance Works

The payment process for eligible international visitors is designed to be simple:

  1. Visit a participating Bank of Baroda merchant.
  2. Scan the Bank of Baroda UPI QR code using an eligible home-country banking or payment application.
  3. Authorise the payment through the visitor’s existing payment application.
  4. Complete the merchant transaction digitally.

The facility allows visitors to use a payment application they are already familiar with rather than depending entirely on cash transactions or currency exchange.
