Mr Avkash Kumar, 2012 batch officer, who has been appointed as SSP, Patna yesterday night, carried a reputation of an upright and efficient officer. That’s why he has been given charge of the most prestigious post at his rank and which is politically most sensitive too.
He had eliminated several criminal gangs during his postings as SSP of Darbhanga, Begusarai and SP Gaya. He hails from Semrai village in Bhojpur district of Bihar. He was involved in three encounters in Begusarai in 2019. Next year, he was involved in a public spat with Union Minister Giriraj Singh after the Minister chided him following a road accident.
A young man Prince Kumar had died in the mishap in February 4, 2020. His family members had staged a road blockade with his body demanding registration of the case as a murder. When they refused to budge, the SP arrested four of them. That enraged the local MP, Giriraj Singh.
Mr Avkash Kumar still didn’t relent. The minister then registered his protest with the then DGP Gupteshwar Pandey. Mr Kumar then clarified his position with the DGP demanding evidence of the case being that of murder and not road accident.
During his tenure in Begusarai, he successfully conducted the high profile Lok Sabha election involving the incumbent Union Minister Giriraj Singh and former JNU student union president Kanhaiya Kumar. He also ensured law and order situation during 2020 Assembly and 2021 Panchayat elections in Begusarai.
He had eliminated three gangs in different encounters in which more then half a dozen criminals were gunned down in Bharati. After completing a three year stint in Begusarai, Mr Kumar was transferred as SSP Darbhanga in December 2021.
In yet another incident Mr Avkash Kumar had earned lot of praise when he had solved a case of dacoity, recovering much more than what had been looted. On November 12, 2019 dacoits had looted 9 kg gold Ornaments from two jewellers in Begusarai. Mr Kumar not only arrested the criminals but also recovered 16 kg gold from them.
Earlier, while posted at SP Arah, Me Avkash Kumar had earned the wrath of local MLA Manorama Devi of ruling Janta Dal (United) after he ensured life imprisonment to his son Rocky Kumar in a murder case.
