New Delhi/Guwahati: NHPC Limited, a Navratna public sector undertaking under the Ministry of Power, has achieved two major milestones at its 2,000 MW Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric (HE) Project located across Arunachal Pradesh and Assam, during the intervening night of January 31 and February 1, 2026.
The achievement marks a significant step toward strengthening India’s energy security, grid stability, and clean energy transition.
Synchronisation and Commercial Operation Achieved
The first milestone was achieved at 9:00 pm on January 31, 2026, with the successful synchronisation of Unit-1 (250 MW) with the National Grid. Shortly thereafter, at midnight on February 1, 2026, Unit-3 (250 MW) commenced commercial operations.
With the commissioning of these two units, the Subansiri Lower HE Project has now contributed 500 MW of its planned 2,000 MW capacity to the National Grid.

Boost to Clean Energy and Grid Stability
NHPC officials stated that the addition of 500 MW of hydropower will play a critical role in meeting peak power demand, enhancing grid stability, and supporting the integration of renewable energy sources such as solar and wind into India’s power system.
Hydropower from the Subansiri Lower project is expected to act as a key balancing resource for India’s evolving energy mix.
NHPC Leadership Applauds Project Teams
Mr. Bhupender Gupta, Chairman and Managing Director of NHPC, expressed his gratitude to the Ministry of Power and the Governments of Arunachal Pradesh and Assam for their continued support. He commended the dedicated efforts of the Subansiri Lower Project team, led by Mr. Rajendra Prasad, Executive Director, along with officials at NHPC’s Corporate Office.
Mr. Gupta highlighted that the successful commissioning of the units reflects NHPC’s technical expertise and execution capability, and will help ensure the timely commissioning of the remaining units of the project.
Mr. Sanjay Kumar Singh, Director (Projects), congratulated the site and corporate teams for achieving the milestones, while Mr. Rajendra Prasad acknowledged the support of executing agencies including GE Vernova, BGS-SGS-SOMA, TREL, and PEL, as well as local stakeholders and communities.

The Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project is among the largest hydroelectric projects in India and is considered vital for meeting the long-term energy requirements of the Northeast and the country as a whole.
