Indian Masterminds Stories

Gujarat: In a major infrastructure milestone, the Ahmedabad-Dholera Expressway has been inaugurated, significantly enhancing connectivity between Ahmedabad and the rapidly developing Dholera Special Investment Region (DSIR). The 109-kilometer access-controlled greenfield expressway (NE-08) was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his Gujarat visit, marking a key step in the state’s economic and industrial development.

Faster Travel Across Key Economic Hubs

The new expressway reduces travel time dramatically:

  • Ahmedabad to Dholera: from 2 hours to just 45 minutes
  • Ahmedabad to Bhavnagar: 1 hour 45 minutes
  • Maximum vehicle speed is set at 120 km/h, ensuring fast and safe travel

This will not only benefit daily commuters but also boost logistics and trade efficiency across the region.

High-Tech Infrastructure and Strategic Connectivity

The expressway boasts modern facilities and strategic interconnections:

  • Begins at Sardar Patel Ring Road, Sarkhej, passing through major interchanges including Sindhrej, Vejalka, and Pipli
  • Pipli connected via a 9.56 km link road to Dholera International Airport, providing direct access
  • Extends to Adhelai in Bhavnagar district, improving connectivity for surrounding industrial zones

This high-tech corridor is designed to support Gujarat’s vision of a smart city in Dholera, with world-class facilities and industrial development.

Driving Industrial Growth and Investment

The Ahmedabad-Dholera Expressway, constructed at a cost of ₹5,100 crore, plays a pivotal role in the Dholera Special Investment Region (DSIR) development:

  • Facilitates faster movement of goods and people, strengthening industrial and commercial activities
  • Supports the growth of Dholera as a state-of-the-art smart city with global-standard infrastructure
  • Expected to boost investment, create employment, and accelerate regional economic growth

The project has been designed in four packages, with plans to expand from four lanes to eight lanes in the future, ensuring long-term scalability.

Government and Ministerial Perspective

According to Union Minister Nitin Gadkari, the expressway will not only improve travel but also enhance logistics and trade efficiency, connecting key urban and industrial hubs across Gujarat. The project aligns with the state’s development model, which prioritizes modern infrastructure to drive economic growth and regional development.

Key Features of the Ahmedabad-Dholera Expressway

  • Length: 109 km, four-lane greenfield expressway (NE-08)
  • Future Expansion: Ready for expansion to eight lanes
  • Connectivity: Direct access to Dholera International Airport and industrial corridors
  • High-Tech Infrastructure: Modern interchanges, safer highways, and faster travel speeds
  • Economic Impact: Supports DSIR smart city, boosts investment, employment, and industrial growth

The inauguration of the Ahmedabad-Dholera Expressway marks a major milestone in Gujarat’s infrastructure development, improving connectivity, reducing travel time, and driving economic growth.

By linking Ahmedabad to the Dholera smart city, the expressway reinforces Gujarat’s position as a national model for modern infrastructure and industrial development.
