Arunachal Pradesh – In a landmark step toward commissioning India’s largest hydroelectric power project, Pankaj Agarwal (1992 Batch IAS Officer, of the MP Cadre), Secretary, Ministry of Power, inaugurated the state-of-the-art Power House Control Room at NHPC’s 2000 MW Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project (SLHEP) on July 20.
The ceremony marked a critical milestone in the development of this strategic clean energy asset, situated on the Subansiri River at the border of Arunachal Pradesh and Assam.
A Milestone in India’s Hydropower Mission

The inauguration event was attended by senior dignitaries including NHPC CMD R.P. Goyal, Director (Projects) Sanjay Kumar Singh, and the Executive Director & Head of Project at SLHEP. Other senior officials from NHPC and the Ministry of Power were also present.
Commending the work done at Subansiri, Pankaj Agarwal congratulated the NHPC team and executing agency M/s Patel Engineering for their exceptional efforts in delivering one of India’s most sophisticated hydropower control rooms. Driving India’s Clean Energy Future
The Subansiri Lower HE Project is a run-of-the-river scheme featuring eight 250 MW Francis turbines. The newly inaugurated control room is designed with advanced systems to enable real-time monitoring and precision control of all operational components. Its integration is expected to ensure seamless power generation and optimized plant management.
The project will contribute nearly 7,500 million kilowatt-hours of clean energy annually, playing a vital role in supporting India’s renewable energy transition and enhancing energy access in the North-East and beyond.
Project Nears Commissioning Phase

With significant components now completed—including the dam reaching its top level and the successful installation of spillway radial gates—the project is moving rapidly toward full commissioning. The launch of the Power House Control Room is seen as a major inflection point in that journey.
The dedication of the NHPC team and its partners underscores the national importance of SLHEP. As India continues to strengthen its renewable power portfolio, this project stands as a shining example of technological excellence and inter-agency collaboration in public sector infrastructure development.
