New Delhi: India is preparing to significantly boost its air strike capability with the DRDO LRASSCM missile—a long-range air-to-surface supersonic cruise missile designed for the Indian Air Force’s Su-30MKI fleet.

The DRDO LRASSCM missile is expected to deliver high-speed precision strikes on enemy land targets from long distances, improving India’s stand-off attack capability.

Recent reports indicate that the missile will soon undergo critical integration and carriage trials on Su-30MKI fighter jets before induction.

What is the DRDO LRASSCM Missile

The Long Range Air-to-Surface Supersonic Cruise Missile (LRASSCM) is an indigenous missile under development by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).

  • Designed for long-range precision strikes on land targets
  • Operates at supersonic speeds, making interception difficult
  • Intended for air-launch from fighter aircraft, especially Su-30MKI
  • Focuses on high survivability and deep strike capability

This missile represents India’s push towards self-reliance (Aatmanirbhar Bharat) in advanced defence technologies.

Why Su-30MKI is the Chosen Platform

The Su-30MKI is the backbone of the Indian Air Force and one of the most versatile multirole fighters.

  • Twin-engine, long-range fighter aircraft
  • Capable of carrying heavy payloads and advanced weapons
  • Already integrated with missiles like BrahMos and Astra

Integrating LRASSCM with Su-30MKI will allow India to:

  • Strike targets deep inside enemy territory without entering hostile airspace
  • Improve stand-off attack capability
  • Enhance multi-role combat effectiveness

What are the Features of DRDO LRASSCM Missile (Expected)

1. Supersonic Speed

Like India’s BrahMos missile, LRASSCM is expected to travel at speeds above Mach 2–3, reducing enemy reaction time.

2. Long Range Strike

  • Designed to hit targets at long distances (hundreds of km)
  • Allows aircraft to launch from safe zones

3. High Precision

  • Equipped with advanced guidance systems
  • Capable of hitting high-value targets like bunkers, bases, and infrastructure

4. Stealth & Survivability

  • Likely to include radar-evading features and manoeuvrability
  • Difficult to detect and intercept

BrahMos vs LRASSCM Missile: Which is Better

RoleAir-to-surface land attackMulti-platform (land, sea, air)
DevelopmentFully indigenousIndo-Russian joint venture
FocusDeep precision strikeVersatile strike weapon
Future UseExclusive to Su-30MKI (initially)Widely deployed across forces

The BrahMos missile is already India’s primary supersonic cruise missile, but LRASSCM is expected to provide more specialized air-launched strike capability.

Timeline of DRDO LRASSCM Missile

  • Development Phase: Advanced stage
  • Next Step: Carriage and integration trials on Su-30MKI
  • Induction Timeline: Likely within the next few years (post successful trials)

These trials are crucial to ensure compatibility with aircraft systems and mission performance.

What is the Importance of DRDO LRASSCM Missile

1. Stronger Air Power

The missile will significantly boost the Indian Air Force’s offensive capability.

2. Stand-Off Warfare Advantage

Pilots can strike targets without entering enemy air defence zones.

3. Indigenous Defence Growth

Supports India’s goal of reducing dependence on imports.

4. Regional Deterrence

Enhances India’s ability to deter threats in a complex geopolitical environment.
