Agartala: The National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC), in collaboration with the Tripura government, has completed a technical assessment to determine the restoration and modernisation requirements of the state’s only hydroelectric project at Dumboor in Gomati district.
Tripura Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath announced that the state government plans to invest approximately Rs 100 crore to restore the damaged facility and improve its power generation capacity. The project aims to bring the plant’s operational output to 10–11 MW against its original installed capacity of 15 MW across three units.
Work on the restoration and modernisation project is expected to begin by December 2026, following the completion of detailed assessments and preparatory procedures.
Tripura Plans Rs 100 Crore Investment in Dumboor Hydroelectric Project
The proposed investment will support the restoration of the Dumboor hydroelectric plant, which sustained severe damage during the 2024 floods.
The technical assessment conducted by NHPC in collaboration with the state government has identified the restoration and modernisation requirements needed to bring the facility back into operation and improve its performance.
Key details of the project include:
- Project location: Dumboor, Gomati district, Tripura
- Estimated investment: Around Rs 100 crore
- Original installed capacity: 15 MW across three units
- Target power generation capacity: 10–11 MW
- Expected start of work: By December 2026
- Project focus: Restoration, repair and modernisation of the flood-damaged hydroelectric facility

Dumboor Hydroelectric Plant Damaged in 2024 Floods
The Dumboor hydroelectric project suffered significant damage during the 2024 floods, affecting the state’s existing hydropower infrastructure.
The restoration initiative seeks to address the damage and modernise the facility to enable electricity generation. The technical assessment by NHPC is an important step towards determining the work required before restoration activities begin.
Tripura Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath shared the project update at the ground-breaking ceremony for the restoration and modernisation initiative.
Once the work progresses, the project is expected to help recover part of the plant’s original generation capacity and support the state’s electricity infrastructure.
Project to Strengthen Tripura’s Renewable Energy Capacity
The restoration of the Dumboor hydroelectric plant is aimed at improving the reliability of the state’s ageing power infrastructure while supporting renewable energy generation.
Although Tripura is a power-surplus state, it primarily relies on gas-based turbine power generation. Reviving the hydroelectric facility could diversify the state’s electricity generation mix and make better use of its existing hydropower resources.
The project is expected to contribute to the state’s energy infrastructure through the following measures:
- Restoring a key hydroelectric facility damaged by floods.
- Improving the operational performance of the plant’s three generating units.
- Supporting renewable electricity generation through hydropower.
- Diversifying Tripura’s power generation sources alongside its gas-based capacity.
- Making productive use of existing infrastructure through modernisation.
The planned investment of around Rs 100 crore reflects the state’s efforts to restore the facility and strengthen its electricity generation capabilities.
