New Delhi: NHPC Limited has successfully lowered the 395 metric tonne (MT) generator stator for Unit 7 of its 2,000 MW Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project (SLHEP) in Arunachal Pradesh and Assam. The critical operation marks another major step forward in the electro-mechanical works required for the commissioning of the 250 MW Unit 7.
The generator stator was successfully lowered on September 30, 2026, following detailed planning, precision engineering and close coordination among the stakeholders involved in the project.
The successful completion of the operation will enable further assembly of the generator stator inside the Unit 7 pit, followed by subsequent commissioning of the unit.
NHPC Completes Critical Stator Lowering Operation for Unit 7
The lowering of the 395 MT generator stator is a significant milestone in the development of Unit 7 of the Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project.
The operation was carried out through meticulous planning and precision engineering, with seamless coordination between NHPC and the agencies involved in the project.
The latest achievement is expected to facilitate the next stages of electro-mechanical assembly and move Unit 7 closer to commissioning.
Key highlights of the operation:
- Project: Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project
- Total installed capacity: 2,000 MW
- Unit: Unit 7
- Unit capacity: 250 MW
- Generator stator weight: 395 MT

Unit 7 Progress: Rotor Assembly Already Underway
The latest stator-lowering milestone follows the commencement of rotor assembly for Unit 7 in August 2026.
The rotor assembly marked an earlier important stage in the erection and commissioning process of the 250 MW unit. With the stator now successfully lowered, further assembly work can proceed inside the unit pit.
The sequence of activities is expected to support the completion of the electro-mechanical works and subsequent commissioning of Unit 7.
Subansiri Lower HEP to Generate 2,000 MW from 8 Units
The Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project has a planned installed capacity of 2,000 MW, comprising eight units of 250 MW each.
With the latest achievement, NHPC has moved closer to the full operationalisation of the project. The commissioning of Unit 7 will represent another step towards achieving the project’s complete generation capacity.
The project is strategically important for strengthening hydropower generation and supporting the power requirements of the region.
NHPC CMD Bhupender Gupta Congratulates Project Team
On the successful completion of the stator-lowering operation, Bhupender Gupta, CMD, NHPC, congratulated the entire Subansiri Lower Project team.
The project team is led by Pradip Kumar Ray, Executive Director and Head of Project. NHPC also acknowledged the contribution of GE Vernova, the executing agency involved in the project.
The successful execution of the critical operation reflects the coordinated efforts of the project team and stakeholders involved in the electro-mechanical works.
Subansiri Lower HEP Moves Closer to Full Commissioning
The successful lowering of the generator stator is expected to pave the way for further assembly work for Unit 7 and its eventual commissioning. With rotor assembly having already commenced and stator installation now progressing, the project has taken another step towards commissioning its remaining generating capacity.
Once all eight 250 MW units are operational, the Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project will have a total installed capacity of 2,000 MW.
