Bhopal/Indore: In a significant move aimed at fostering economic development and sustainable urbanization, NITI Aayog, in collaboration with the Government of Madhya Pradesh and AECOM India Pvt. Ltd., has signed a Statement of Intent (SoI) to develop comprehensive economic plans for the Indore Economic Region and Bhopal Economic Region. The signing ceremony was attended by Anurag Jain, Chief Secretary of Madhya Pradesh, along with senior state officials and key stakeholders from both regions.

Focus on Strategic Economic Growth

The SoI marks the beginning of a structured partnership to create an economic roadmap encompassing infrastructure development, industrial growth, investment attraction, innovation promotion, and sustainable urbanization. The initiative is part of NITI Aayog’s larger “Developing City Regions as Growth Hubs” (G-Hub) program, which aims to transform urban regions into high-growth economic centers with robust employment generation and competitive advantages.

Officials noted that this collaboration will help promote evidence-based policymaking, ensure efficient resource allocation, and attract high-value investments to enhance the economic competitiveness of both Indore and Bhopal.

Kick-Off Meeting Highlights

Following the SoI signing, the State Government conducted a kick-off meeting on the G-Hub initiative to discuss the framework, objectives, and methodology for the economic plans. Ms. Anna Roy, Principal Economic Adviser at NITI Aayog, elaborated on the G-Hub concept, explaining how it integrates urban planning, industrial development, and investment promotion into a single strategic framework.

During the meeting, Chief Secretary Anurag Jain provided insights into the economic strengths and potential of both regions, emphasizing the need for data-driven planning and sustainable growth strategies. District Collectors from both Indore and Bhopal also presented overviews of their districts, highlighting key industrial clusters, infrastructure gaps, and investment opportunities.

Goals of the G-Hub Initiative

The collaboration aims to:

  • Establish a long-term economic roadmap for the Indore and Bhopal regions.
  • Promote sustainable urban development through integrated planning.
  • Attract domestic and foreign investments in industrial and service sectors.
  • Generate employment opportunities for local populations.
  • Enhance the overall competitiveness of the two economic regions at the national and global levels.

Officials emphasized that the G-Hub initiative will serve as a model for other city regions in India, demonstrating how coordinated planning between central and state governments, along with private sector expertise, can drive inclusive and sustainable economic growth.

Partnership to Foster Investment and Innovation

Through this collaboration, NITI Aayog and the Madhya Pradesh Government aim to identify sectoral opportunities, improve infrastructure readiness, and strengthen investment promotion mechanisms. AECOM India Pvt. Ltd., with its technical expertise in urban planning and infrastructure development, will assist in preparing actionable blueprints for the economic growth of both regions.

The initiative is expected to enhance connectivity, streamline industrial development, and encourage innovation, ultimately creating a sustainable ecosystem for businesses and residents alike.

Looking Ahead

The development of Indore and Bhopal as growth hubs aligns with India’s broader vision of urban transformation and regional economic development. By combining strategic planning, investment facilitation, and evidence-based policy measures, the partnership aims to unlock the full economic potential of these regions while ensuring inclusive growth and environmentally sustainable development.

Officials from NITI Aayog and the Madhya Pradesh Government expressed optimism that the project will serve as a blueprint for other city regions in India, positioning Indore and Bhopal as leading economic centers in central India over the next decade.
