NMDC Signs MoU with Colorado School of Mines to Advance Mining Research and AI-Based Technologies

Strategic partnership aims to boost joint research, technology development, and knowledge exchange in mining, metallurgy, and mineral processing

New Delhi: State-owned NMDC Limited has entered into a strategic Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Colorado School of Mines (CSM), USA, to strengthen international collaboration in advanced mining research and technology development. The MoU was executed on December 24, 2025, in New Delhi, marking a significant step toward integrating global expertise with India’s mining sector.

Framework for Joint Research and Knowledge Exchange

The agreement establishes a comprehensive framework for cooperation between NMDC and the Colorado School of Mines, a globally renowned institution in mining and earth sciences. The collaboration will focus on joint research, technology development, training programmes, capacity building initiatives, and academic exchanges.

Both institutions will work together on seminars, workshops, and collaborative projects aimed at addressing emerging challenges and opportunities in the mining industry.

Key Focus Areas of Collaboration

Under the MoU, NMDC and CSM will collaborate in critical domains, including:

  • Mining engineering and mine planning
  • Mineral processing and extractive metallurgy
  • Application of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning (AI/ML) in mining operations
  • Advanced materials and sustainable mining technologies

The partnership is expected to support innovation, efficiency, and sustainability across the mining value chain.

Governance and Implementation Mechanism

The agreement outlines clear provisions related to implementation mechanisms, intellectual property sharing, confidentiality, duration, arbitration, and termination. As per the exchange filing, either party may terminate the MoU with a three-month written notice, while any amendments can only be made through mutual written consent.

Strengthening India’s Global Mining Footprint

By collaborating with an internationally reputed institution like the Colorado School of Mines, NMDC aims to enhance its research capabilities, adopt global best practices, and accelerate the deployment of cutting-edge technologies in mining and mineral processing.
