Indian Masterminds Stories

New Delhi: Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Limited (ONGC) has successfully capped the gas blowout at Well No. RDS-147A in its Rudrasagar Field, Sivasagar district, Assam, at 11:15 AM today, ending a 15-day-long emergency operation that tested the limits of crisis response and technical resilience.

The blowout began on June 12, 2025, during servicing operations at the well. ONGC responded immediately, securing the site, activating its Crisis Management Team, and initiating standard safety protocols. With no injuries, fire, or casualties reported throughout the incident, the operation has been hailed as a benchmark in emergency management.

Timeline of the Incident: From Blowout to Capping

  • June 12, 11:45 AM – Gas blowout occurs during routine servicing at ONGC’s RDS-147A well.
  • June 13 – ONGC reports the situation is under control, but efforts to cap the well are unsuccessful in the following days.
  • June 20 – International well control experts arrive on-site after initial containment plans fail.
  • June 26 – A breakthrough is achieved as all debris and rig material are cleared.
  • June 27, 11:15 AM – Final capping of the well successfully completed.

International Expertise Key to Operation’s Success

The operation saw a turning point after June 20, when an international well control agency was brought in for assistance. Following a comprehensive assessment, the team led coordinated efforts alongside ONGC engineers to execute well capping in adverse monsoon conditions.

The entire operation was executed without any injuries, fires, or casualties, showcasing ONGC’s crisis preparedness and the seamless coordination with global experts,” an ONGC spokesperson stated.

Assam CM and State Officials Praised for Support

ONGC also acknowledged the constant support of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and local administration throughout the crisis. “The confidence and active ground-level support from the Government of Assam helped us immensely,” the company said in a release.

Environmental Safety and Air Quality Monitored

Throughout the operation, ONGC maintained rigorous air quality monitoring and environmental safety protocols. The company confirmed that air quality remained safe, and no environmental hazards were reported during the containment period.

What Went Wrong?

The blowout reportedly began when gas unexpectedly gushed out during well servicing operations, possibly due to a sudden pressure imbalance. Despite deploying emergency response teams immediately, multiple containment attempts failed, prompting ONGC to call in international experts for advanced intervention.
