New Delhi: India took another giant leap in its clean energy journey today as Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the 132-kilometre Durgapur–Kolkata section of the Durgapur–Haldia Natural Gas Pipeline, a crucial component of the Pradhan Mantri Urja Ganga (PMUG) Project. The ceremony, held in Durgapur, marks a major milestone in bringing affordable, sustainable energy to homes and industries across eastern India.
Spearheading the technical execution of this critical pipeline segment was Engineers India Limited (EIL), which provided end-to-end Project Management Consultancy (PMC) services. With this addition, the Urja Ganga pipeline network now stretches over 1,030 km, covering key stretches like Dobhi–Durgapur, Durgapur–Haldia, and Dhamra–Haldia.
Engineering Feat Across Challenging Terrain
EIL’s success in the project is marked by its complex execution across difficult terrain, showcasing the company’s engineering prowess:
- Over 130 crossings completed using the Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) technique
- The ambitious Roopnarayan River crossing — a standout engineering achievement — executed with the HDD Intersect Method, covering a length of 2.8 km
- Significant challenges in Right of Use (RoU) acquisition were also overcome through strategic coordination and planning
Gas Access That Transforms Lives
The pipeline is expected to deliver clean, piped natural gas to a vast population in West Bengal, benefitting:
- Industries seeking cleaner and more economical energy alternatives
- Households, which will now have access to cooking gas without relying on LPG cylinders
- Transport and power sectors, enabling a greener shift in operations
This initiative aligns with the national goal of increasing the share of natural gas in India’s energy mix from the current ~6% to 15% by 2030.
EIL: Building Energy Corridors of the Future
For Engineers India Limited, this project is another feather in the cap of its long record in executing complex pipeline infrastructure across varied terrains. EIL’s role as PMC ensured not only on-time delivery but also world-class engineering standards in the face of tough logistical and geographical constraints.
