In a major push toward strengthening India’s green energy infrastructure, Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi laid the foundation stones and inaugurated five significant transmission projects under the Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (POWERGRID) at a high-profile event held in Bikaner.
The event marked a critical milestone in India’s journey toward clean, reliable, and accessible electricity. The foundation stones were laid for two vital transmission projects under the Rajasthan Renewable Energy Zone (REZ) Phase-IV (Part-2: 5.5 GW). These include Part B, being developed by POWERGRID Sirohi Transmission Limited, and Part E, being developed by POWERGRID Mewar Transmission Limited, both subsidiaries of POWERGRID. These transmission corridors are instrumental in evacuating renewable power from high-potential solar and wind hubs in Jaisalmer and Barmer.
PM Inaugurates Three Completed Transmission Projects
In addition to the new projects, Mr. Modi also dedicated three completed POWERGRID projects to the nation:
- Transmission System for Evacuation of Power from Neemuch Solar Park (1000 MW), executed by POWERGRID Neemuch Transmission System Limited (PNTL).
- Transmission System for Evacuation of Power from REZ Phase-IV (Part 1) [Bikaner Complex] – Part E, developed by POWERGRID Bikaner Transmission System Limited.
- Augmentation of Transformation Capacity with the addition of 1×500 MVA at 400/220 kV (6th) at the Fatehgarh-II Pooling Station, enhancing grid reliability and addressing N-1 contingency needs.
These projects will significantly increase the grid’s ability to absorb and transmit renewable energy, supporting India’s ambition to transition to a clean energy economy.
POWERGRID: Strengthening India’s Transmission Backbone
As of April 30, 2025, POWERGRID operates an expansive transmission network with 283 substations, over 1,80,239 circuit kilometers (ckm) of transmission lines, and a transformation capacity of 5,64,961 MVA. It maintains a stellar system availability of over 99.81% through the use of advanced technologies, digital infrastructure, and automation.
Rajasthan, with its vast solar and wind energy resources, plays a crucial role in India’s clean energy roadmap. The projects launched today will enhance both local grid resilience and interstate power exchange, ensuring greater energy security and enabling sustainable growth.
