Raipur: The Centre has approved fisheries and aquaculture projects worth ₹956.86 crore in Chhattisgarh under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY) over the last six years, with the central government releasing ₹274.16 crore of its approved share during 2020-21 to 2025-26.
The information was provided by Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying Minister Rajiv Ranjan Singh alias Lalan Singh in the Rajya Sabha in response to a question.
₹956.86 Crore Projects Approved in Six Years
The Centre approved projects with a central share of ₹321.01 crore for Chhattisgarh between 2020-21 and 2025-26. Of this, ₹274.16 crore had been released to the state.
The projects cover fish production, aquaculture, infrastructure, transportation and livelihood support.
Major interventions approved include:
- 28 fish seed hatcheries
- 3,200 hectares of new fish ponds
- 287 recirculatory aquaculture systems
- 820 biofloc units
- 14 fish feed mills
- 511 small fish transport vehicles
- 8,500 cages in reservoirs
- One Integrated Aqua Park
5.52 Lakh Fishers to Get Annual Insurance Cover
PMMSY interventions also include social-security and livelihood support for fishers.
Under the approved measures:
- 5.52 lakh fishers are covered annually under accidental insurance.
- 9,667 fishers receive livelihood and nutritional support annually.
- 4,189 fishers have improved access to institutional credit through Kisan Credit Cards (KCCs).
Fish Production Nearly Triples Over a Decade
According to the government, fish production in Chhattisgarh increased from 3.14 lakh metric tonnes in 2014-15 to 8.73 lakh metric tonnes in 2024-25.
The government said the interventions have supported higher fish production, increased farmers’ incomes, promoted entrepreneurship and rural employment, and helped reduce post-harvest losses.
PMMSY, the Centre’s flagship fisheries scheme, has a total outlay of ₹20,750 crore for 2020-21 to 2026-27 (September 2026) and is being implemented across all States and Union Territories.
