Indian Masterminds Stories

New Delhi: Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (PGCIL) has completed the acquisition of NES Pune East New Transmission Limited (NPENTL), a special purpose vehicle (SPV) created for a major transmission project in Maharashtra. The acquisition, finalised on March 12, 2026, follows PGCIL emerging as the successful bidder under the tariff-based competitive bidding (TBCB) route.

The SPV was previously managed by PFC Consulting Limited, which served as the bid process coordinator for the project. With this acquisition, Power Grid aims to enhance the power transmission infrastructure in the Pune region and address long-standing transmission constraints.

Project Scope and Objectives

The NES Pune East transmission project is part of a Network Expansion Scheme in Maharashtra, designed to strengthen power transmission in Pune Region-I. The project includes the development of a 765/400 kV AIS substation at Pune East and associated transmission lines.

Key elements of the project include:

  • Establishment of a 765 kV and 400 kV AIS substation in Ahilyanagar district
  • Construction of new 765 kV and 400 kV transmission lines across Maharashtra
  • Bay extension works at existing substations to improve grid reliability

The project will be executed on a Build, Own, Operate and Transfer (BOOT) basis, ensuring long-term operational efficiency and maintenance of the transmission assets.

The final acquisition price will be subject to adjustment based on audited accounts.

With this acquisition, PGCIL strengthens its footprint in Maharashtra’s power transmission sector, supporting the state’s growing energy demand and promoting reliable electricity supply.
