New Delhi: Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (POWERGRID) has announced the full commissioning of its 20 GW transmission project designed to evacuate electricity from Renewable Energy Zones (REZ) in Rajasthan. The project, known as the Transmission System for Evacuation of Power from REZ in Rajasthan (20 GW) under Phase-III Part-C1, was completely commissioned with effect from September 22, 2026.

In a regulatory filing dated October 11, 2026, the state-owned transmission utility disclosed that it had received the Date of Commercial Operation (DOCO) notification for the project. The notification was dated October 7, 2026, formally confirming the project’s commercial operation.

POWERGRID Rajasthan Transmission Project Achieves Full Commissioning

The commissioning marks the completion of a transmission infrastructure project designed to facilitate the evacuation of electricity generated in Rajasthan’s renewable energy zones. With a planned capacity of 20 GW, the project forms part of the transmission network required to connect renewable energy resources with the wider power grid.

Rajasthan is an important region for renewable energy development, particularly solar and wind power. Transmission infrastructure plays a crucial role in moving electricity generated in renewable energy-rich areas to the broader electricity network, supporting the integration of clean energy into the country’s power supply system.

Key project details:

  • Company: Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (POWERGRID)
  • Project capacity: 20 GW
  • Project location: Rajasthan
  • Project phase: Phase-III Part-C1
  • Commissioning date: September 22, 2026
  • DOCO notification date: October 7, 2026
  • Date of receipt of notification: October 11, 2026

DOCO Notification Received on October 11, 2026

According to POWERGRID’s regulatory disclosure, the project was completely commissioned with effect from September 22, 2026. The company received the DOCO notification on October 11, 2026, while the notification itself was dated October 7, 2026.

The Date of Commercial Operation is an important milestone for a transmission project, as it establishes the date from which the relevant transmission assets are recognised as commercially operational under the applicable arrangements.

The disclosure confirms the project’s commissioning status but does not specify the following details:

  • Total project investment
  • Transmission line length
  • Substation details
  • Expected revenue contribution

Project Ownership and Corporate Restructuring

The transmission project was initially entrusted to POWERGRID Ramgarh II Transmission Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of POWERGRID.

However, as part of a corporate restructuring, POWERGRID Ramgarh II Transmission Limited was amalgamated with POWERGRID Vataman Transmission Limited, another POWERGRID subsidiary. The amalgamation took effect from March 1, 2026, following an order issued by the Ministry of Corporate Affairs on January 27, 2026.

Key corporate restructuring details:

  • Original subsidiary: POWERGRID Ramgarh II Transmission Limited
  • Amalgamated subsidiary: POWERGRID Vataman Transmission Limited
  • Effective date of amalgamation: March 1, 2026
  • Ministry of Corporate Affairs order date: January 27, 2026

The corporate restructuring changed the subsidiary arrangement associated with the project. The commissioning announcement was subsequently made by POWERGRID through its regulatory filing.

Importance of the Project for Rajasthan’s Renewable Energy Sector

The 20 GW transmission project is part of the infrastructure being developed to support renewable energy evacuation from Rajasthan’s designated renewable energy zones. As renewable energy capacity expands, adequate transmission systems are essential to transport electricity from generation centres to demand centres.

The project’s commissioning is significant for several reasons:

  • Renewable energy evacuation: It is designed to facilitate the transfer of electricity from Rajasthan’s renewable energy zones.
  • Grid connectivity: Transmission infrastructure connects renewable energy generation areas with the wider power network.
  • Clean energy integration: A stronger transmission network supports the integration of solar and wind power into the electricity grid.
  • Transmission infrastructure development: The project represents a milestone in the development of infrastructure associated with Rajasthan’s renewable energy programme.

Solar and wind power generation depends on weather conditions and resource availability. A well-developed transmission network helps integrate this variable generation into the electricity grid and supports the efficient transfer of power across regions.

However, POWERGRID’s disclosure did not provide further technical details or a breakdown of the project’s financial contribution.
