New Delhi: Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (PGCIL) has been declared the successful bidder under Tariff Based Competitive Bidding (TBCB) for an inter-state transmission project aimed at evacuating power from the 6 GW Barmer-II solar project in Rajasthan.
Power Grid received the Letter of Intent (LoI) on September 2, 2026. The project will be implemented on a Build, Own, Operate and Transfer (BOOT) basis at quoted annual transmission charges of ₹3,244.33 crore.
Power Grid to Develop 6,000 MW HVDC Transmission System
The major transmission scheme will establish 6,000 MW, ±800 kV High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) terminal stations at:
- Barmer-II in Rajasthan
- South Kalamb in Maharashtra
The existing transmission capacity at the South Kalamb substation will also be augmented under the project.
The infrastructure is designed to facilitate the large-scale transfer of renewable power from Rajasthan to major electricity demand centres in other parts of the country.
1,000-km HVDC Line to Connect Rajasthan, Gujarat and Maharashtra
A key component of the project will be the construction of an approximately 1,000-km ±800 kV HVDC bipole transmission line.
The line will pass through Rajasthan, Gujarat and Maharashtra, creating a long-distance transmission corridor for renewable electricity generated in western India.
The project will also involve the construction of associated 400 kV transmission lines and bays in Rajasthan.
SynCon Units to Improve Grid Stability
To enhance grid stability and maintain power quality, the transmission scheme will include the installation of two synchronous condenser (SynCon) units at the Barmer-II power station.
The project will include the associated bays required for these units.

Project to Strengthen Renewable Power Transmission
The transmission infrastructure is expected to strengthen India’s inter-state power transfer capability and facilitate the integration of large-scale renewable energy into the national grid. The project will enable electricity generated from the Barmer solar complex to be transmitted over long distances across state boundaries, connecting renewable generation with major consumption centres.
It is also expected to support India’s broader renewable energy expansion by providing the transmission infrastructure required for the evacuation and integration of large renewable power projects.
Power Grid Expands Role in Renewable Energy Evacuation
The project reinforces Power Grid’s role in developing high-capacity transmission infrastructure for India’s clean energy transition. By establishing a dedicated HVDC corridor between Rajasthan and Maharashtra, the scheme will help transfer large volumes of renewable electricity while supporting grid stability and efficient inter-state power movement.
