Maharatna PSU Steel Authority of India (SAIL) has recently announced that it has signed a memorandum of understanding with global resources company BHP to collaborate on low-emission steel manufacturing technologies. This partnership aims to advance decarbonization efforts in steel production, according to a statement from SAIL.

“This collaboration marks a significant step for both SAIL and BHP in promoting low-carbon steelmaking methods for the blast furnace process in India. Under this agreement, the two companies are exploring various initiatives to support the decarbonization of SAIL’s integrated steel plants that utilize blast furnaces. The initial phase includes studying different strategies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions,” the statement noted.

The initiatives will examine alternative reductants, such as hydrogen and biochar, while also building local research and development capabilities to facilitate the transition to decarbonization.

SAIL Chairman, Mr. Amarendu Prakash expressed enthusiasm for the partnership, stating, “We are eager to collaborate with BHP in developing sustainable steel production methods. Aligning the steel sector with climate commitments is essential.”

BHP’s Chief Commercial Officer Rag Udd emphasized the importance of collaboration, saying, “Decarbonizing the steel industry is a challenge we cannot tackle alone. By combining our expertise and resources, we can develop technologies and capabilities that have the potential to significantly reduce carbon emissions both now and in the future.”

SAIL Independent Director Suggests A Merger Of RINL & NSL With SAIL:

Efforts are being made to rescue Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited (RINL) from its financial troubles, underscored by a high-level meeting scheduled today in New Delhi. In anticipation of this meeting, Sagi Kasi Viswanatha Raju, an independent director at Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL), has called on the Union Government to consider merging RINL (Visakhapatnam Steel Plant) and NMDC Steel (Jagdalpur in Chhattisgarh) with SAIL.

Director Raju advocated for the formation of a single mega Central Public Sector Enterprise that would combine these three public sector units (PSUs), which could potentially position it as the 10th largest steel producer in the world.

Mr. Raju mentioned that he submitted a detailed proposal to the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) and Niti Aayog to discuss the possibility of SAIL taking over RINL. The Visakhapatnam plant is currently facing a critical situation and requires immediate assistance to sustain its status as a PSU. He also noted that several BJP leaders have voiced their support for this initiative, with Union Minister for Steel, Mr. H.D. Kumara Swamy responding positively to the proposal for RINL and NMDC Steel to be integrated into SAIL.
