Punjab CM’s Top Aide VK Singh Set to Retire, State Awaits His Successor

VK Singh, Special Chief Secretary to Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, is set to retire on Friday, leaving a key position vacant in the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO). The 1990-batch IAS officer of the Punjab cadre was repatriated to the state in November last year and appointed as Special Principal Secretary to the CM.

Farewell to a Veteran Officer

Singh, who previously served on deputation to the Centre as Secretary in the Department of Ex-Servicemen Welfare, was given a farewell on Thursday. Despite speculation of an extension, Singh cleared all pending files before his departure, signaling the end of his tenure.

Search for a Successor

The Punjab government is yet to name his replacement, creating a temporary void in the state’s top bureaucracy. After the retirement of Singh’s predecessor, A Venu Prasad, in July last year, the position remained unfilled until December, with the government relying on interim arrangements.

Tejveer Singh, a 1994-batch IAS officer, is reportedly a strong contender for the post. However, no official orders have been issued yet.

Challenges in Punjab’s Bureaucracy

VK Singh’s retirement adds to the state’s challenges of managing experienced officers in key positions. The state has limited senior IAS officers available, including Anirudh Tewari, a 1990-batch officer posted at MGSIPA, and KAP Sinha, a 1992-batch officer serving as Chief Secretary.

With Singh’s departure, the government must act swiftly to address the leadership vacuum in the Chief Minister’s Office and ensure administrative continuity.
