DA Reaches 50%: Punjab Announces 8% Hike for Employees and Pensioners

Punjab government has announced an 8% Dearness Allowance hike for employees and pensioners, taking total DA to 50%. The revised allowance will be paid with this month’s salary.

Chandigarh: The Punjab government has announced an 8% increase in Dearness Allowance (DA) for state government employees and pensioners following a meeting between Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and representatives of employee and pensioner organisations.

The revised DA will be released in two instalments of 4% each, taking the total DA for Punjab government employees to 50%. The enhanced allowance will be included in salaries paid this month, providing a direct increase in monthly earnings for eligible employees and pensioners.

The decision was announced by Cabinet Minister Aman Arora along with representatives of employee organisations after the meeting in Chandigarh. The government said the move will put an additional financial burden of around ₹248 crore on the state exchequer.

8% DA Hike to Be Released in Two Instalments

The key decision from the meeting is the release of the 8% DA increase in two separate instalments of 4% each.

With the latest revision, the total DA for Punjab government employees will reach 50%. Since DA is linked to basic pay, the increase will raise the monthly allowance received by eligible government employees. Pensioners will also benefit from the revision.

The revised DA is scheduled to reflect in the salary paid during the current month, making the announcement immediately relevant for thousands of serving employees and pensioners across the state.

CM Mann Holds Talks With Employee Representatives

The DA decision followed a meeting between Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and representatives of several employee and pensioner organisations.

Aman Arora said the discussions with the Chief Minister helped address the deadlock between the government and employees. He described government employees as an integral part of the state’s administrative system and said their concerns needed to be heard through dialogue.

According to Arora, individuals and employee organisations have the right to raise their concerns, while it is the government’s responsibility to listen and work towards resolving pending matters.

The meeting also covered issues beyond the DA revision, with the government indicating that discussions on other long-pending demands would continue.

₹248 Crore Additional Burden on State Exchequer

The DA revision will have a direct financial impact on Punjab’s finances.

The government estimates that implementing the 8% increase will place an additional burden of around ₹248 crore on the state exchequer. The expenditure will cover the enhanced allowance for eligible employees and pensioners.

For employees, the increase comes at a time when discussions with the government have also focused on several pending service-related demands. The latest decision provides a concrete financial relief while keeping negotiations on other issues open.

Earlier Disagreement Over Employee Strike

The latest meeting also comes against the backdrop of an earlier disagreement between the government and employee organisations.

At a previous meeting in Jalandhar, Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann had declined to hold discussions with employee unions unless they first withdrew their strike. Union representatives did not agree to the condition, following which the Chief Minister left without holding talks.

The subsequent Chandigarh meeting provided an opportunity for both sides to return to negotiations. The government said several issues were discussed in detail and that there was consensus on key matters.

Several Employee and Pensioner Bodies Attend

Representatives from a number of employee and pensioner organisations participated in the Chandigarh meeting.

These included the Sanjha Front of Pensioners, Sanyukt Mulazim Manch, Punjab Secretariat Association and Punjab Civil Secretariat Officers Association (Retd.).

The meeting was also attended by Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema, Cabinet Minister and AAP Punjab President Aman Arora, and Cabinet Minister Dr. Baljit Kaur.

Aman Arora said the Chief Minister heard the demands raised by employee representatives in detail. He also said the government believes many of the pending issues have their roots in decisions taken during previous governments.

More Talks Expected on Pending Demands

The government has indicated that the latest DA announcement is part of a broader effort to resolve outstanding employee-related issues through discussions.

Another meeting with the Chief Minister is expected in around two weeks, giving employee organisations an opportunity to continue discussions on demands that remain unresolved.

The government has also said that efforts will be made to resolve disputes that have reached the courts through mutual dialogue and negotiations wherever possible.

DA Hike Adds to Ongoing Employee-Government Dialogue

The Punjab DA hike marks one of the key outcomes of the latest talks between the state government and employee organisations. For employees and pensioners, the immediate impact will be higher DA payments, with the revised allowance scheduled to be reflected in this month’s salary.

At the same time, the government’s decision to continue negotiations indicates that discussions with employee and pensioner organisations will extend beyond the DA issue. The proposed follow-up meeting is expected to provide another platform for addressing remaining demands.

The development therefore combines a direct financial measure with continued dialogue on service-related concerns, linking employee welfare with the broader functioning of Punjab’s public administration.
