Bihar Museum and Bihar Skill Development Mission have joined hands to launch three specialised courses, helping youth build skills for careers in museums, tourism, art, culture and folk-art design.

Patna: Bihar is linking its rich artistic and cultural heritage with employment opportunities for young people through a new skill development initiative. The Bihar Museum and Bihar Skill Development Mission (BSDM) signed an agreement on Friday to introduce specialised training programmes in art, culture, museums and tourism.

The initiative will offer three courses aimed at equipping young people with practical skills that can help them explore employment as well as self-employment opportunities in the cultural and creative sectors.

The courses are Museum Tour Guide, Certificate Course in Art Appreciation and Design in Folk Art.

The agreement was signed by BSDM Mission Director Manish Shankar and Bihar Museum Additional Director Ashok Kumar Sinha. The programme was organised under the guidance of Bihar Museum Director General Anjani Kumar Singh.

Three Specialised Courses for Youth

The new courses have been designed to connect skill development with Bihar’s cultural and artistic resources. Instead of limiting training to classroom-based learning, the programmes will focus on developing practical knowledge that participants can use in real-world settings.

The Museum Tour Guide course will prepare trainees to interact with visitors and tourists at museums. Participants will learn how to explain artworks, historical events and aspects of Bihar’s cultural heritage in a simple and engaging manner.

This training can be particularly useful as museums and heritage sites attract visitors who need accessible information about the collections and historical significance of the places they visit.

Training in Art Appreciation

The Certificate Course in Art Appreciation will introduce young people to different forms of art and help them understand their significance.

The course will provide basic knowledge about artworks and different artistic traditions. Such training can help participants develop a better understanding of visual culture and build a foundation for further opportunities in the art and cultural sector.

By introducing young people to art in a structured manner, the programme also seeks to create greater awareness of Bihar’s artistic heritage.

Focus on Bihar’s Folk Art

The third course, Design in Folk Art, will focus on Bihar’s folk and traditional art forms.

Participants will receive practical training to develop designs based on traditional artistic styles. The focus on design can help connect Bihar’s cultural traditions with contemporary creative work.

This could also open opportunities for young people interested in handicrafts, design and other creative activities. Those who develop expertise through the programme may explore opportunities beyond conventional employment, including independent creative work and entrepreneurship.

Creating Opportunities Beyond Traditional Jobs

The initiative is significant because it brings together two areas that are often treated separately — cultural heritage and skill development.

Training in museum services, art appreciation and folk-art design can help young people develop skills that have applications across several sectors. These include museums, tourism, art, culture and handicrafts.

For instance, trained museum guides can support visitor experiences at cultural institutions, while folk-art and design skills can be used in handicraft products, creative projects and other forms of cultural enterprise.

The programmes therefore have the potential to support both employment and self-employment, depending on the skills and interests of individual trainees.

Linking Bihar’s Heritage With Youth Skills

Bihar has a long history of art, architecture, handicrafts and folk traditions. The state is also home to museums and heritage sites that preserve its cultural and historical legacy.

The new partnership seeks to make this heritage part of the state’s broader skill development ecosystem. By providing specialised training, the initiative aims to help young people understand Bihar’s cultural resources while acquiring skills that can be used professionally.

Officials from the Youth, Employment and Skill Development Department were also present during the agreement ceremony. Secretary-cum-Chief Executive Officer of BSDM Kaushal Kishore and Additional Chief Executive Officer Navdeep Shukla attended the programme.

The partnership between Bihar Museum and BSDM represents an effort to expand the scope of skill development beyond conventional job-oriented courses. By bringing culture, tourism, art and traditional skills into the training ecosystem, Bihar is seeking to create new pathways for young people while strengthening the connection between its cultural heritage and livelihood opportunities.
