On the occasion of Govardhan Puja, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Mr. Pushkar Singh Dhami offered prayers to Gau Mata (the revered cow) at the cowshed located within his official residence. The Chief Minister extended wishes of prosperity, harmony, and well-being to the people of the state and emphasised the deep cultural, spiritual, and ecological significance of the festival.
Cow Conservation as a Pillar of Livelihood and Faith
Mr. Dhami highlighted that in Sanatan Dharma, the cow is not only considered sacred but is also integral to the agrarian economy. “Gau Mata represents both faith and livelihood. Serving and protecting cows strengthens our culture and supports lakhs of families dependent on cattle rearing,” he said.
Boost in Government Support for Cow Shelters
In a major pro-cattle welfare initiative, the Chief Minister announced that the daily maintenance grant for stray cattle housed in Gau Sadans (cow shelters) has been significantly increased—from Rs. 5 per animal per day to Rs. 80. This move reflects the government’s strengthened commitment toward animal welfare and rural sustainability.
60% Subsidy on Private Cowshed Construction
The state government has also launched a progressive policy to encourage private cowsheds. A 60% subsidy is now available for the construction of private cow shelters, further enabling self-reliance among rural and agrarian communities.
54 Cow Shelters Underway Across Uttarakhand
Mr. Dhami informed that approximately 54 Gau Sadans are currently under construction in various districts. These shelters are expected to provide structured care and protection for stray and domesticated cattle, contributing to both animal welfare and rural employment.
Connecting Culture with Ecology and Economy
Mr. Dhami remarked that Govardhan Puja is a festival that not only honours divine traditions but also symbolises balance between humans, nature, and animals. The celebrations serve as a reminder to stay rooted in culture while also working collectively towards sustainable development.
Digital Message of Goodwill and Gratitude
Sharing his wishes on social media platform X, Mr. Dhami posted:
“Govardhan Puja is not only a religious festival but also a celebration of gratitude toward nature and farmers. May this sacred day bring abundance and peace into the lives of all citizens of Uttarakhand.”
