Jaipur: The Rajasthan Police has a new top cop — IPS Rajeev Kumar Sharma, a seasoned officer with a track record of high-profile roles, including his recent tenure with the CBI in Delhi. On Thursday, he officially assumed charge as the Director General of Police (DGP) of Rajasthan, bringing with him a new vision and a strong reform-oriented mindset.
Handpicked by the Bhajanlal Sharma government, DGP Sharma, an IPS officer of 1990 batch from Rajasthan cadre, has signaled from the outset that he is determined to revamp policing in the state — both in terms of service to the public and internal reforms for police personnel.
“Want Rajasthan’s Policing to Become a National Model”: DGP Sharma’s Vision
Speaking to the media after taking charge, DGP Sharma expressed his ambition to make Rajasthan’s police force a benchmark for other states in the country. He stated:
“I want people to look at Rajasthan Police and say, this is how policing should be done in India.”
He emphasized that access to justice at the grassroots is his top priority — “when a citizen walks into a police station, they should feel heard, respected, and helped in every possible way.” Sharma said he will soon begin consultations with police officers across ranks to develop a comprehensive roadmap for this transformation.
Technology-Driven Policing to Tackle Cyber Crime
Recognizing the rising threat of cyber crime, DGP Sharma stressed the urgent need to equip Rajasthan Police with cutting-edge technology. He said:
“To counter new-age crime, the police must be one step ahead. Cybercriminals are using advanced tools — we must respond with smarter systems and trained personnel.”
The DGP revealed plans to upgrade digital infrastructure, introduce AI-supported crime mapping and analysis, and implement specialized training programs for officers, especially in cyber policing and forensics.
Welfare of Police Personnel a Key Focus
While laying out his vision for public service, DGP Sharma also spoke passionately about the need to improve working conditions for police personnel.
He emphasized, “Our police force must be looked after. Better housing, quality education for their children, and access to competitive exams — these should not be privileges, but standard.”
DGP Sharma also hinted at introducing welfare schemes that ensure not just operational efficiency but also mental and emotional well-being for police officers, who often work in high-stress environments.
