Jaipur: The Rajasthan government has appointed Dr Rajeshwar Singh (Retd. IAS:1989:RJ) as the new Commissioner of the Rajasthan State Election Commission, following the completion of Madhukar Gupta’s (Retd. IAS:1985:RJ) tenure on September 16. The announcement was officially made on Tuesday by Governor Haribhau Bagde.
Dr Rajeshwar Singh’s Vast Administrative Experience
Dr Singh retired in July 2024 as Chairman of the Revenue Board and brings a rich administrative background to his new role. Over the span of his career, he has held key positions including:
- Collector of Jaipur
- Additional Chief Secretary, Panchayati Raj and Rural Development
- Director General, Indira Gandhi Panchayati Raj Institute
- Divisional Commissioner and Collector in major districts of Rajasthan
His experience in local governance and rural administration is expected to contribute significantly to the conduct of fair and efficient local body elections in the state.
Selection Among Four Top Contenders
Dr Singh’s name had been among the frontrunners as reported by media. The other contenders for the post included-
- PK Goyal (Retd. IAS:1988:RJ)
- Shubhra Singh (IAS:1989:RJ)
- Anand Kumar (IAS:1994:RJ)
Ultimately, Dr Singh was chosen for his extensive background in rural governance and administrative leadership.
Madhukar Gupta’s Term Comes to an End
Madhukar Gupta, who was appointed as Election Commissioner in August 2022, completed his term on September 16. His tenure saw several critical moments, including his outspoken criticism of the delay in Panchayat elections by the state government.
Gupta recently argued that the State Election Commission was fully prepared for elections but the government had not shown willingness to move forward. He also expressed skepticism over the “One State, One Election” concept, stating that such a move would require a constitutional amendment and was currently impractical.
Looking Ahead
With Dr Rajeshwar Singh now at the helm, the Rajasthan State Election Commission is expected to focus on pending rural polls, institutional strengthening, and ensuring greater transparency in the electoral process at the grassroots level.
