Lucknow: Senior IAS officer Ranvir Prasad (IAS: 2000: UP) has taken charge as Principal Secretary, Energy and Additional Energy Sources in Uttar Pradesh, along with the chairmanship of several key state power-sector organisations.
The appointment gives Prasad responsibility for the Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation Limited (UPPCL), Uttar Pradesh Power Transmission Corporation Limited (UPPTCL), Uttar Pradesh Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Limited (UPRVUNL) and the Uttar Pradesh State Load Despatch Centre (UPSLDC). He assumed charge at Shakti Bhawan after being relieved of his previous responsibilities in the Food and Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs departments.
Ranvir Prasad’s Educational Background
Prasad is a 2000-batch IAS officer of the Uttar Pradesh-cadre and holds a B.Tech in Electrical Engineering, with records describing the qualification as first division. His engineering background is particularly relevant to his earlier assignments in Uttar Pradesh’s energy sector.

Mr. Prasad is a direct-recruit IAS officer who entered the service through the UPSC Civil Services Examination.
Early Career in Tamil Nadu
Before moving into senior administrative positions in Uttar Pradesh, Prasad served in Tamil Nadu during the early part of his IAS career.

After moving to Uttar Pradesh, Prasad held several field-administration assignments as District Magistrate.

These assignments gave him experience in district-level administration before he moved into senior roles across different state departments.
Experience Across Multiple Departments
Prasad’s career has included assignments in infrastructure, industry, rural development, social welfare, labour, handloom and textiles, urban development, housing, revenue, education, food and civil supplies, besides the energy sector.
Among his notable roles were Divisional Commissioner, Bareilly, Secretary-level responsibilities in the state Secretariat and Housing Commissioner. He also served in the power sector as Managing Director of UPPTCL and UPRVUNL.
His previous power-sector responsibilities included leadership roles with the South Electricity Distribution Corporation and the state’s generation and transmission corporations.
Return to the Power Sector
Before the latest appointment, Prasad was serving as Principal Secretary, Food and Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs, with responsibilities including the Food and Civil Supplies Commissionerate.
Under the latest reshuffle, he has returned to the energy sector with responsibility for several major power institutions.
