RBI Appoints Monisha Chakraborty as Executive Director Effective August 3, 2026 

The three-decade RBI veteran, previously Chief General Manager-in-Charge in the Department of Supervision, takes charge of the Foreign Exchange and Financial Markets Regulation departments from August 3, 2026.

New Delhi: The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has appointed Monisha Chakraborty as Executive Director (ED) with effect from August 3, 2026. A career central banker with more than three decades of experience at the RBI, Chakraborty will oversee the central bank’s Foreign Exchange Department and Financial Markets Regulation Department.

Before her elevation as Executive Director, Chakraborty was serving as Chief General Manager-in-Charge in the Department of Supervision. Her appointment brings extensive experience across banking supervision, foreign exchange, and government and bank accounts to two key areas of the central bank’s operations.

Monisha Chakraborty Brings Over Three Decades of RBI Experience

Chakraborty has spent more than 30 years working at the Reserve Bank of India, serving in various regulatory, supervisory, and operational roles.

During her career, she has worked in several important areas, including:

  • Banking supervision
  • Foreign exchange
  • Government and bank accounts
  • Banking regulation and oversight

Her diverse experience has provided her with broad exposure to the RBI’s regulatory framework and central banking operations.

Will Oversee Foreign Exchange and Financial Markets Regulation

As Executive Director, Monisha Chakraborty will be responsible for the Foreign Exchange Department and the Financial Markets Regulation Department.

The Foreign Exchange Department is responsible for implementing and administering India’s foreign exchange management framework. It deals with regulatory matters related to foreign exchange transactions and the country’s foreign exchange regime.

The Financial Markets Regulation Department handles the regulatory framework for key financial markets under the RBI’s jurisdiction. Its areas of responsibility include:

  • Money markets
  • Government securities markets
  • Foreign exchange markets
  • Derivatives markets

Together, these departments play an important role in maintaining orderly financial markets and supporting the stability and smooth functioning of India’s financial system.

Experience in Banking Supervision and Consumer Grievance Redressal

Prior to her appointment as Executive Director, Chakraborty served as Chief General Manager-in-Charge in the Department of Supervision, giving her significant experience in the oversight of regulated financial entities.

She has also served as a Banking Ombudsman, where she dealt with issues related to banking customer complaints and grievance redressal. This role further strengthened her experience in banking regulation and consumer protection.

Associated with RBI Balance Sheet Review Committee

During her career, Chakraborty was also associated with a technical committee constituted to review the format of the RBI’s Balance Sheet and Profit and Loss Account.

Her involvement in the committee reflects her experience in areas related to the central bank’s financial reporting and institutional operations.

Educational Background

Monisha Chakraborty holds an Economics degree and a Master’s degree in Business Economics, both from the University of Delhi.

Her academic background in economics, combined with more than three decades of experience in central banking, supervision, foreign exchange, and financial regulation, adds to her expertise as she takes charge of the two key departments.

Appointment Takes Effect from August 3

The RBI appointment of Monisha Chakraborty as Executive Director took effect on August 3, 2026.

With her extensive experience across supervision, foreign exchange, government and bank accounts, and banking regulation, she will now play an important role in overseeing the RBI’s work related to foreign exchange management and financial market regulation.
