Goa: Rear Admiral Nelson AJ D’Souza, NM (Retd), a highly decorated and experienced officer of the Indian Navy, has taken charge as the Director (Operations) of Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL) – a crucial defence public sector undertaking under the Ministry of Defence.

Prior to this appointment, Rear Admiral D’Souza served as the Commandant of the Military Institute of Technology (MILIT), Pune, where he played a transformative role in shaping the future of military education and joint services training.

Strategic Appointment to Boost GSL’s Capabilities
In an official statement, GSL welcomed Rear Admiral D’Souza, emphasizing that “his extensive technical knowledge, strategic leadership, and distinguished naval career are set to significantly bolster GSL’s shipbuilding and repair capabilities.” His induction comes at a critical time as GSL continues to expand its footprint in indigenous warship construction, refit, and modernization under India’s Atmanirbhar Bharat vision.

A Distinguished Naval Career Spanning 34 Years
Commissioned into the Indian Navy in March 1991, Rear Admiral D’Souza brings over three decades of frontline operational, engineering, and managerial experience. He is an alumnus of St. Aloysius College, Mangaluru and Sri Jayachamarajendra College of Engineering (SJCE), Mysuru, holding a degree in Electronics and Communication Engineering.

Further sharpening his military acumen, he is a distinguished graduate of the Defence Services Staff College (DSSC), Wellington and the Naval War College, Goa.

Key Appointments and Operational Excellence
Throughout his Naval service, Rear Admiral D’Souza held several key positions, including-

  • Chief Staff Officer (Technical), Eastern Naval Command
  • Principal Director (Weapon Equipment) at Naval HQ
  • General Manager (Refit), Naval Dockyard, Mumbai

His sea tenures included deployments on prestigious warships such as INS Viraat, INS Kirch, and INS Mysore. In recognition of his exemplary service, he was awarded the Nau Sena Medal (NM) in 2018.

Notable Contributions at MILIT Pune
As Commandant of MILIT, Pune, he led pathbreaking reforms in military education, strengthened tri-services integration, and spearheaded industry-academia collaborations in cutting-edge technologies. His leadership was pivotal in preparing armed forces officers from India and friendly foreign nations for evolving defence and technological challenges.

Driving GSL’s Strategic Objectives
In his new role at Goa Shipyard Limited, Rear Admiral D’Souza will oversee all operational aspects of shipbuilding, refitting, and technical services. His vision is expected to align GSL’s activities with India’s long-term maritime defence goals, especially under the Make in India and Defence Export Promotion initiatives.
