New Delhi: ONGC Energy Centre Trust (OECT), the research arm of Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Limited (ONGC), has signed an agreement with Engineers India Limited (EIL) to establish a Helium Recovery Demonstration Plant at ONGC’s Kuthalam Gas Collection Station in Cauvery Asset, Tamil Nadu. The agreement was finalized on 18 August 2025.
Building India’s First Helium Recovery Demonstration Plant
The project, valued at ₹39.42 crore plus applicable GST, is slated for completion within 18 months. It includes preparation of a Detailed Project Report (DPR), Basic Engineering Design Package (BEDP), and full project execution under an EPCM and Supply model. This covers design, engineering, procurement, construction, commissioning, and performance testing.
Harnessing Indigenous Technology for Strategic Gas
The plant will utilize a technology package developed by CSIR–Indian Institute of Petroleum (CSIR-IIP) to recover Grade-A helium of 99.995% purity from natural gas. Designed to process 750 Nm³/hr of natural gas, the facility is built with flexibility to operate at 110% of design capacity.
Strategic Importance for India’s Energy Security
Helium is a high-value resource with critical applications in space exploration, semiconductors, cryogenics, fibre optics, and medical technology. India currently relies on imports to meet its helium needs. This project represents a significant step in building indigenous capabilities, supporting the vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat and strengthening India’s energy and technology security.

Collaboration for Innovation and Sustainability
By combining OECT’s R&D expertise with EIL’s engineering and project execution strengths, this initiative marks the first-of-its-kind effort in India. ONGC emphasized that the project aligns with its Energy Now and Next vision, blending innovation with industrial application to drive sustainable energy solutions.
