New Delhi: The Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) Bhilai Steel Plant (BSP) has launched a dedicated CO₂ Dashboard for Bhilai Steel Plant and Chandrapur Ferro Alloy Plant (CFP), Chandrapur, to strengthen carbon emission monitoring and accelerate decarbonisation efforts.

The digital platform was inaugurated by Chittaranjan Mahapatra, Director I/c (Bhilai Steel Plant) during a special event held on August 18, 2026. The initiative is aimed at enabling daily monitoring, analysis and corrective action related to carbon emissions at both plant and individual shop levels.

SAIL-BSP Launches Digital CO₂ Monitoring Platform

The newly launched dashboard has been developed in collaboration with M/s Centra World, a consultant appointed by SAIL’s Environment Management Division (EMD), Kolkata.

The platform is designed to provide accurate and timely data on CO₂ emissions across production units, helping management identify emission-related anomalies and take corrective measures.

Key features of the CO₂ Dashboard include:

  • Daily monitoring of CO₂ emissions.
  • Plant-level and shop-level emission tracking.
  • Analysis of emission trends and anomalies.
  • Support for timely corrective actions.
  • Improved operational efficiency and emission management.
  • Standardised digital data for decision-making.

Dashboard Aligns with Global Carbon Standards

The CO₂ Dashboard assesses emissions in accordance with internationally recognised methodologies and frameworks.

These include:

  • World Steel Association (WSA) methodology
  • GHG Protocol
  • European Union’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM)

The adoption of these standards is expected to strengthen SAIL’s ability to monitor emissions and improve the carbon performance of its steel production operations.

CO₂ Dashboard to Support India’s Carbon Market

The digital platform is also expected to support SAIL’s preparedness for India’s evolving carbon market. The dashboard can assist SAIL’s operating units in monitoring emission-intensity targets and preparing for market mechanisms under the Carbon Credit Trading Scheme (CCTS).

Shop-level and product-level monitoring will also help improve the understanding of the carbon intensity of steel products and strengthen their competitiveness in international markets.

SAIL Officials Highlight Importance of Emission Reduction

Addressing the gathering, Mr. Chittaranjan Mahapatra, Director I/c (BSP), said reducing greenhouse gas emissions should not be viewed merely as a regulatory requirement but as a collective responsibility towards environmental protection and a sustainable future.

Mr. Rakesh Kumar, Executive Director (Works), highlighted the importance of process discipline, technical standards and quality parameters. He noted that adherence to these practices can deliver a dual benefit by improving productivity while reducing costs and emissions.

Mr. P. Murugesan, Executive Director (CFP Chandrapur), and Mr. Rajiv Pandey, Executive Director (EMD, Kolkata), emphasised the importance of reliable and standardised digital data for targeted decision-making and timely interventions across operating units.

Dashboard Supports SAIL Chairman’s Decarbonisation Vision

Ms. Ajanta Sengupta highlighted that the dashboard translates the vision of the SAIL Chairman into a simple and user-friendly tool that can support top management in monitoring carbon emissions and taking informed decisions.

The programme was conducted by Mr. K. Praveen, General Manager (Environment Management), who also expressed gratitude to the participating departments and partner agencies involved in developing and implementing the digital platform.

Senior SAIL Officials Attend Launch Event

The launch event was attended by senior officials from BSP, CFP and EMD-Kolkata, including:

  • Mr. Chittaranjan Mahapatra, Director I/c, Bhilai Steel Plant
  • Mr. Rakesh Kumar, Executive Director (Works)
  • Mr. P. Murugesan, Executive Director (CFP, Chandrapur)
  • Mr. Rajiv Pandey, Executive Director (EMD, Kolkata)
  • Senior Chief General Managers and officers from BSP, CFP and EMD-Kolkata

The launch marks another step in SAIL’s efforts to use digital tools and data-driven monitoring to support carbon emission reduction and sustainable steel production.
