New Delhi: In a strategic move to enhance logistics and operational efficiency, Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL), a Maharatna CPSE, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Rail India Technical and Economic Service (RITES), a Navratna CPSE. The collaboration aims to optimize the operations and maintenance of SAIL’s diesel locomotive fleet across its plants and mines.
Strengthening In-Plant and Mine Logistics
SAIL operates a dedicated mini rail network within its plants and mining operations to ensure the seamless transportation of inbound raw materials, in-process transfers, and outbound finished products. The effective maintenance of its diesel locomotives, along with the use of wet-leased locomotives, is critical to sustaining smooth operations, supporting planned capacity expansion, and driving future growth.
Role of RITES in Diesel Locomotive Operations
As Indian Railways accelerates its transition to electric locomotives, RITES continues to offer specialized expertise in diesel locomotive operations and maintenance. Leveraging Indian Railways’ facilities, access to spare parts, and a skilled workforce, RITES is uniquely positioned to provide operational support to SAIL, ensuring the reliability and efficiency of its diesel fleet.
Benefits of the Collaboration
The MoU is designed to:
- Allow both organizations to focus on their core competencies
- Optimize operational costs and improve efficiency
- Enhance reliability of locomotives across the SAIL network
Contribute to reducing the carbon footprint through more efficient operations
MoU Signing Ceremony
The agreement was signed by:
- Mr P.K. Baisakhiya, Executive Director (Operations), SAIL
- Mr Sandeep Jain, Executive Director (Technical Services), RITES
The signing took place in the presence of senior officials from both SAIL and RITES, marking a step forward in strengthening industrial rail logistics and operational collaboration.
Future Outlook
With this partnership, SAIL aims to ensure uninterrupted operations at its plants and mines while optimizing locomotive performance. RITES’ expertise and technical support are expected to play a key role in sustaining diesel fleet efficiency even as the broader railway network transitions toward electrification.
