New Delhi: Sanjay Ratan, a 1998-batch senior IPS officer of the Bihar-cadre officer, has been transferred from the Sashastra Seema Bal’s (SSB) Lucknow Frontier to the force’s headquarters in New Delhi.
Ratan has been posted as Inspector General (Intelligence), SSB, Force Headquarters (FHQ), New Delhi, under the Ministry of Home Affairs. He has also taken charge of his new assignment, according to a report by Witness in the Corridors.
Ratan was serving as Inspector General, SSB Lucknow Frontier before the transfer. His tenure in the SSB has included responsibilities related to the India-Nepal and India-Bhutan border areas, where the force is tasked with border guarding and tackling activities such as smuggling and human trafficking.
Sanjay Ratan’s IPS Career
Sanjay Ratan is a 1998-batch IPS officer of the Bihar cadre and was recruited through the UPSC Civil Services Examination. His educational qualification is a B.Tech degree.
He joined the IPS in December 1998 and has served in central deputation with the SSB. His professional background includes operational and administrative responsibilities within the force.

In November 2025, the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet approved a two-year extension of his central deputation as IG, SSB, beyond January 19, 2026, in relaxation of the IPS Tenure Policy. The extension allowed him to continue in the SSB until January 19, 2028.
During his tenure as IG, SSB Lucknow Frontier, Ratan also addressed issues concerning security along the open India-Nepal and India-Bhutan borders. In 2023, he spoke about the SSB’s efforts against smuggling and human trafficking along the border areas.
With his latest transfer, Ratan will now serve as IG (Intelligence), SSB, FHQ, New Delhi, shifting from a frontier-based assignment to a headquarters role.
