New Delhi: South Eastern Coalfields Limited (SECL), a subsidiary of Coal India Limited, has identified seven mine dumps for potential extraction of rare earth elements (REEs), marking a strategic step towards reducing India’s import dependence and boosting domestic critical minerals production.
Unlocking Value from Coal Mine Waste
SECL’s initiative aligns with the government’s focus on extracting value from coal mine overburden. Trace rare earth elements, essential for high-tech industries such as electronics, renewable energy, and defense, have been detected in overburden dumps across SECL’s major coalfields in Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh.

Scientific Exploration and Tendering Process
Harish Duhan, Chairman and Managing Director of SECL, confirmed that the company has already initiated the tendering process for exploration. Over the next year, detailed scientific studies using advanced geophysical and geochemical techniques will be conducted to pinpoint viable mine dumps with economically extractable REEs.
Duhan stated, “Within a year, we will identify which areas and mine dumps carry rare earth elements. This scientific assessment will guide future pilot projects and commercial operations.”
Strategic Importance of Rare Earth Elements
Rare earth elements are critical for India’s technological self-reliance, supporting sectors like:
- Electric vehicles (EVs)
- Renewable energy solutions
- Defense technologies
- Electronics and high-tech manufacturing
With China dominating global REE supply chains, SECL’s initiative is part of India’s broader strategy to strengthen domestic production and reduce reliance on imports.
