The Governor of Telangana has appointed Mr. G. Chandrasekhar Reddy, a 1991-batch Indian Forest Service (IFS) officer, as the Chief Information Commissioner of the state.
According to the official order issued on Monday, May 5, 2025, Mr. Reddy will serve a three-year term or until he reaches the age of 65, whichever comes earlier, in accordance with Section 16 of the Right to Information Act, 2005 (as amended in 2019).
The post of Chief Information Commissioner had been vacant since September 25, 2022, leading to a backlog of thousands of RTI appeals. RTI activists had repeatedly urged the government to reconstitute the commission to address the growing pendency.
A native of Boregaon village in Echoda Mandal, Adilabad district, Mr. Reddy previously served as Principal Secretary to the Chief Minister and also held the position of Vice Chairman & Managing Director of the Telangana Forest Development Corporation Limited. From April 20, 2025, he briefly held additional charge as Principal Chief Conservator of Forests for a period of ten days.
Mr. Reddy holds a B.Sc. in Forestry from Osmania University, a postgraduate degree in Life Sciences from Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), New Delhi, a Master’s in Management and Public Policy from IIM Bangalore, and a Ph.D. in Environmental Sciences from Kakatiya University.
With vast experience in natural resource management, watershed-based livelihood development, and forest and wildlife conservation, Mr. Reddy is also the founding dean of the Forest College and Research Institute, Hyderabad.
