Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala’s Director General of Police (DGP) Ravada A Chandrasekhar has initiated an internal inquiry into a sexual harassment complaint lodged by two women sub-inspectors against a senior IPS officer, invoking provisions under the Prevention of Sexual Harassment (POSH) Act.
The complaint was first filed with Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Ajeetha Beegum, who recorded preliminary statements and forwarded the matter to the Police Headquarters (PHQ) for further investigation.
ICC to Conduct Probe, AIG Merin Joseph Assigned to Lead Investigation
According to DGP Chandrasekhar, the matter is now being examined by the Internal Complaints Committee (ICC) at PHQ. Merin Joseph, Assistant Inspector General (AIG – Policy), has been tasked with leading the probe and is expected to submit a detailed report.
When contacted by Onmanorama, Merin Joseph declined to comment, citing the sensitive and confidential nature of the case.
Objectionable Messages Alleged, No FIR Yet
According to police sources, the complaint involves allegations of inappropriate and objectionable messages sent by the senior IPS officer to the women officers. Since both complainants are posted outside Thiruvananthapuram district, the case was elevated to PHQ jurisdiction to avoid conflict of interest and ensure neutrality.
A preliminary hearing was held by DIG Ajitha Beegum, during which both sub-inspectors reaffirmed their accusations. However, no FIR has been registered at this stage, as the matter remains under internal inquiry.
Senior IPS Officer Denies Charges
The accused senior IPS officer has denied all allegations, calling the complaint “fabricated” and “motivated.” Police officials have so far not disclosed the identity of the officer involved, maintaining strict confidentiality around the proceedings.
Next Steps Await Internal Committee Report
With the ICC now in charge of the probe, the matter could escalate further depending on the findings. Legal experts note that if the internal committee finds prima facie evidence of misconduct, criminal proceedings or disciplinary action may follow.
The incident has triggered discussion within the Kerala Police Department about workplace conduct and the efficacy of internal grievance mechanisms.
