Bhopal: Madhya Pradesh’s 70th School State-Level Basketball Competition has begun in Shahdol, bringing together 240 players from 10 divisions of the state. Chief Minister Dr Mohan Yadav joined the inaugural programme virtually on September 16 and highlighted Shahdol’s growing identity as a sporting centre.

The competition features players up to 17 years of age. Addressing the participants, Yadav said sporting talent is not limited to cities and that tribal and rural areas of Madhya Pradesh are increasingly producing athletes capable of reaching higher levels of competition.

Shahdol, known for its sporting culture and often described as a “Mini Brazil” because of the football talent emerging from Vicharpur village, is now seeing growing interest in basketball alongside football, cricket, athletics, kabaddi and volleyball.

Shahdol Builds a Strong Basketball Identity

The Chief Minister pointed to Shahdol’s long association with basketball and the district’s performances in state and national school competitions.

According to the state government, Shahdol’s basketball team has performed strongly at the state level over the past 15 years. Players from the district have also won medals at national school basketball competitions.

Despite limited resources in the past, the enthusiasm among young players remained strong. The district now has three basketball courts, providing more opportunities for students to train and compete.

Shahdol has also participated actively in competitions such as Khelo MP and Youth Games, with several players from the region going on to establish themselves at the national level.

Yadav said the progress of players from areas such as Vicharpur demonstrates that sporting potential exists in villages and smaller regions as well, provided young athletes receive opportunities and training.

240 Players Take Part in State Competition

The ongoing competition has brought together school-level basketball players from across Madhya Pradesh.

A total of 240 players from 10 divisions are participating in the event, all aged up to 17 years. For many of them, the tournament provides an opportunity to compete against players from different parts of the state and gain experience in organised competition.

Yadav encouraged the participants to focus not only on the result but also on learning from the experience.

He said entering the playing field itself is the first step towards victory and urged the young players to approach the tournament with a spirit of learning rather than being focused only on winning or losing.

Sports Can Build Confidence and Decision-Making Skills

Yadav also spoke about the wider role of school sports in the development of students.

He said school-level competitions can help children develop healthy competition, discipline and team spirit from an early age. According to him, sports go beyond physical fitness and can contribute to personality development, confidence and decision-making abilities.

The Chief Minister encouraged players from different divisions to support and motivate one another during the competition.

He also asked participants visiting Shahdol from other districts to carry back positive memories of the district, while promoting a spirit of friendship alongside competition.

Shahdol Has Hosted National-Level Basketball Events

Shahdol’s growing basketball profile has also been reflected in its hosting of major competitions.

Yadav noted that after Shahdol’s strong performance during 2023-24, the district was selected to host a national-level basketball competition in 2024-25. He described the opportunity as an important achievement for the district.

The development adds to Shahdol’s broader sporting identity, particularly its association with football. Vicharpur has emerged as a football training hub and earned recognition as a “Mini Brazil” for producing young football talent.

With basketball now gaining popularity among local youngsters, the district is developing opportunities across multiple sporting disciplines.

Focus on Youth and Sporting Opportunities

Chief Minister Yadav highlighted the expansion of sports programmes such as Khelo India, Fit India and Khelo MP Youth Games, saying they are helping young talent from villages and smaller towns reach competitive platforms.

He announced 2027 as the ‘Year of Youth’ in Madhya Pradesh, focusing on education, skills, employment, startups, sports and leadership, and urged young athletes to aim for national and international competitions.

School Education and Transport Minister Uday Pratap Singh also addressed the players virtually and extended his best wishes.

Public Health Engineering Minister Sampatiya Uikey, Additional Chief Secretary to the Chief Minister’s Office Neeraj Mandloi, School Education Secretary Dr Sanjay Goyal and other departmental officials were present during the programme.

The state-level basketball competition places Shahdol’s sporting infrastructure and young talent in focus. With 240 school players competing and the district building on a 15-year basketball record, the tournament also provides a platform for emerging athletes to gain competitive experience and pursue higher-level opportunities.
