KOLKATA: In a major move aimed at strengthening law and order ahead of the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections, senior Indian Police Service (IPS) officer Siddh Nath Gupta of the 1992 batch has been appointed as the new Director General of Police (DGP) for the state. The decision marks a significant reshuffle in West Bengal’s police leadership, reflecting the government’s focus on ensuring free, fair, and secure elections.

Siddh Nath Gupta: A Profile of Experience and Leadership

Siddh Nath Gupta, currently based in Kolkata, is a seasoned IPS officer with decades of experience in West Bengal’s police department. He assumed his previous role as DG & IGP of the Intelligence Branch (IB) in July 2025, succeeding Gyanwant Singh.

Throughout his career, Gupta has held several pivotal positions, demonstrating expertise in intelligence, law enforcement, and administrative management:

  • Director General of Police, State Crime Records Bureau (SCRB) – Managed state-wide crime data and analytics before his current appointment.
  • Chief of Criminal Investigation Department (CID) – Led critical investigations in West Bengal from 2019.
  • ADG & IGP, South Bengal – Oversaw district-level initiatives and police operations.
  • Commissioner of Police, Asansol-Durgapur – Supervised urban policing between 2015 and 2016.
  • ADG, Counter Insurgency Force (CIF) – Specialized in counter-insurgency operations.

Gupta is also an alumnus of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur, which underscores his strong analytical and strategic skills.

Strategic Appointment Ahead of Elections

The appointment of Siddh Nath Gupta as DGP is a crucial step in the state’s preparations for the upcoming elections. With the Assembly polls scheduled for April 2026, the administration is focusing on maintaining law and order, preventing political violence, and ensuring smooth electoral processes across West Bengal.

A senior official stated, “With his extensive experience in both intelligence and law enforcement, Siddh Nath Gupta is ideally suited to oversee the police machinery during the elections and maintain public confidence in security arrangements.”

Former Key Postings Highlight Administrative Expertise

Gupta’s previous roles have consistently involved high-stakes responsibilities:

  • At the Intelligence Branch (IB), he managed intelligence operations critical for state security.
  • As CID Chief, he led major investigations and crime control strategies.
  • His tenure as ADG & IGP of South Bengal and Commissioner of Asansol-Durgapur saw initiatives to strengthen district and urban policing.

His ability to manage both specialized and administrative units is expected to help the state police navigate the challenges of election-time law and order.

Public and Political Relevance

With this reshuffle, Siddh Nath Gupta has once again become a subject of public discourse. His career trajectory and strategic appointments are closely watched due to their direct impact on election security and governance. Analysts suggest that such high-level postings ahead of elections are aimed at ensuring neutrality, professionalism, and efficiency in handling law and order across the state.

Strengthening Election Security in West Bengal

The appointment of a senior and experienced officer like Gupta aligns with efforts to ensure:

  • Peaceful and violence-free elections
  • Proper deployment of police forces during polling
  • Swift response to any political or communal disturbances

Officials expect that more administrative and police-level changes may follow in the coming weeks as the election machinery gears up for April 2026.
