With IRDAI Chairperson Mr. Debashish Panda, a retired 1987-batch Uttar Pradesh cadre IAS officer, set to complete his three-year tenure on March 13, 2025, speculation is mounting over his successor. The Department of Financial Services (DFS) invited applications for the post on March 10, but it is still too early to confirm a replacement.
Potential Contenders
Two names currently being discussed in bureaucratic circles are:
- Mr. Aramane Giridhar, a retired 1988-batch Andhra Pradesh cadre IAS officer, and former Defence Secretary
- Mr. Ajay Seth, a 1987-batch Karnataka cadre IAS officer, currently serving as Economic Affairs Secretary, who is set to retire on June 30, 2025
Interim Leadership
As the April 6 deadline for applications approaches, the selection process may take time. In the interim, IRDAI’s senior-most member, Mr. PK Arora, is expected to take charge until a regular appointment is made.
The appointment of the next IRDAI Chairperson will be closely watched, given the crucial role of the insurance sector in India’s financial landscape.
