On Monday, Bareilly’s Anti-Corruption Court sentenced four individuals, including three UP Police personnel, to 10 years in prison for attempting to kill IPS officer Kalpana Saxena 14 years ago. The court found them guilty of attempted murder and imposed a fine of ₹50,000 each.
The Incident: A 14-Year-Old Case
The case dates back to September 2, 2010, at around 5 PM, when then-SP (Traffic) Kalpana Saxena received information that some traffic policemen were extorting money from truck drivers near a shrine on the Faridpur Highway. She reached the spot and saw a white Maruti car parked near the trucks, with some people sitting inside and others standing nearby.
As she attempted to apprehend the accused, they tried to flee in the car. In the chaos, SP Saxena grabbed the neck of constable Manoj, who was in the vehicle, while also holding onto the car door. Instead of stopping, the policemen accelerated the vehicle, dragging the IPS officer along. When she ordered them to stop, one of the accused allegedly said, “Run her over and kill her.” They deliberately swerved the car to knock her down, causing severe injuries.
Court Verdict
Special Public Prosecutor Manoj Bajpai presented 14 witnesses in court. Based on the evidence, Special Judge Suresh Kumar Gupta found the four accused guilty of attempted murder and sentenced them to 10 years in jail.
The convicted policemen—Manoj Kumar from Moradabad and Ravendra and Ravindra from Farrukhabad—were also accused of corruption. However, the corruption charges could not be proven in court.
Currently, IPS Kalpana Saxena is serving as Additional Police Commissioner in Ghaziabad.
