Lucknow: In a landmark move aimed at empowering women in the workforce, the Uttar Pradesh government led by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has announced a series of progressive measures for female employees working night shifts. The new directive introduces enhanced wage benefits, safety protocols, and consent-based work conditions, ensuring equality, dignity, and security for women professionals across the state.

Women to Earn Double Wages for Night Duty

Under the revised guidelines, women employees working night shifts will receive double the regular wages, offering them significant economic support. The new policy also allows women to work up to six continuous hours during the night shift without interruption.

In addition, the overtime limit has been increased from 75 hours to 144 hours per quarter, with remuneration to be paid at double wage rates. The initiative is expected to encourage greater female participation in sectors such as manufacturing, healthcare, and customer services, where night shifts are common.

Mandatory Consent for Women Employees

In a move that reinforces women’s autonomy and rights, the government has made explicit consent mandatory for any woman assigned to a night shift. This ensures that no woman is compelled to work against her will and that her comfort and mental well-being are given top priority.

Enhanced Workplace Safety: CCTV and Security Guards Mandatory

Recognizing the importance of safety during late hours, the Yogi government has mandated CCTV surveillance and the deployment of security guards at all workplaces where women are employed in night shifts. These measures are designed to create a safe and secure working environment, giving women and their families greater peace of mind.

Special Safety Provisions for Night Shifts

The government has also introduced a set of special safety protocols to safeguard the physical and mental well-being of women employees. These include improved lighting, monitored commute arrangements, and stricter enforcement of workplace safety norms — ensuring that women can work with confidence and without fear.

A Milestone for Women’s Empowerment in Uttar Pradesh

The Yogi government’s decision is being hailed as a historic step toward gender equality and inclusive growth. By ensuring equal pay, safe working conditions, and respect for women’s consent, the initiative reinforces the state’s commitment to women’s empowerment and welfare.

Officials said the move will not only promote women’s participation in the workforce but also set an example for other states to follow in building a safer, fairer workplace ecosystem.
