Prayagraj: The Uttar Pradesh Public Service Commission (UPPSC) has made a significant move to promote gender equality in the ongoing UP Combined State/Upper Subordinate Services Examination-2024 (UP PCS-2024). A total of 181 out of 947 posts have been reserved for women candidates, suggesting that this year may witness a record number of women securing positions in various administrative roles. The data was disclosed in response to a Right to Information (RTI) query filed by Mohd Raza, an aspirant from Bijnor.
Detailed Reservation Breakdown for Women Candidates
According to the RTI reply, the detailed category-wise reservation includes key positions in various departments. Notably, 7 out of 37 deputy collector posts are reserved for women, marking a significant opportunity in the administrative cadre. Similarly, 3 out of 17 deputy superintendent of police (SP) posts are set aside for women, further broadening their representation in law enforcement.
The reservation also covers a wide range of positions across different departments, including:
- 39 out of 196 assistant commissioner (commercial tax) posts
- 3 out of 16 assistant divisional transport officer posts
- 4 out of 22 treasury/accounting officer posts
- 3 out of 18 assistant commissioner (industries) posts
- 4 out of 23 executive officer posts in the panchayati raj department
- 14 out of 72 block development officer posts
In addition, several posts in the welfare sector and tax departments are reserved for women, including:
- 1 out of 9 district social welfare officer posts
- 1 out of 5 district backward class welfare officer posts
- 28 out of 142 commercial tax officer posts in the state tax commissioner’s office

Furthermore, several positions across various sectors, such as 12 out of 60 posts for deputy jailor and 8 out of 40 sub-registrar posts, have also been reserved for women candidates, providing them with extensive opportunities in administrative roles.
Record-breaking Year for Women Candidates Expected
This year’s examination promises to break previous records for women’s representation in the UPPCS. In the 2018 examination, 258 women were selected out of 976 available posts. Given the current reservation figures and the probability that many women will be selected from the general category as well, it is anticipated that the final selection numbers for women in the 2024 examination will surpass previous records.
The preliminary examination results for UP PCS-2024 were announced on February 28, 2025, with 15,066 candidates qualifying for the mains, which will begin on June 29, 2025.
Posts Without Women’s Reservation
While the UPPSC has made significant strides in ensuring women’s representation, there are several posts that still do not have any reservations for women. These include high-profile positions such as district commandant (home guards), jail superintendent, and assistant director (industries), among others. Some posts in the district food marketing officer and statistical officer (agriculture) categories also do not feature any reservations.
Final Thoughts
The allocation of 181 posts for women in the UP PCS-2024 is a significant step towards achieving gender parity in public services. The broad reservation across multiple sectors is likely to inspire more women to pursue careers in civil services, thereby fostering a more diverse and inclusive administrative system in Uttar Pradesh.
