UPSC Civil Services Exam 2026 Notification to Be Released on January 14; Applications Open Till February 3

New Delhi: The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) has officially announced its recruitment plan for the academic year 2026–27, bringing relief and clarity to lakhs of aspirants preparing for India’s most prestigious competitive examinations. As per the UPSC annual exam calendar 2026, the much-awaited Civil Services Examination (CSE) 2026 and Indian Forest Service (IFS) Examination 2026 notifications will be released on Wednesday, January 14, 2026.

Online Application Process to Begin on January 14

Along with the release of the notification, the online application process will also commence on January 14. Interested and eligible candidates will be able to apply through the official UPSC website upsc.gov.in. The last date for submission of applications is February 3, 2026.

UPSC has advised candidates to ensure that their applications are submitted well before the deadline to avoid last-minute technical issues.

Preliminary Examination Scheduled for May 24, 2026

According to the official exam calendar, the UPSC Civil Services Preliminary Examination 2026 will be conducted on May 24, 2026 (Sunday) at various centres across the country. With the prelims scheduled just four months after the notification, aspirants will have limited preparation time.

The Civil Services Main Examination 2026 is scheduled to begin from August 21, 2026, as per the tentative schedule released by the commission.

Posts to Be Filled Through UPSC CSE 2026

The nationwide recruitment drive aims to select candidates for elite services including:

  • Indian Administrative Service (IAS)
  • Indian Police Service (IPS)
  • Indian Foreign Service (IFS)
  • Indian Revenue Service (IRS)

Other Group A and Group B Central Services

While the exact number of vacancies for 2026 is yet to be announced, the figure will be clarified once the detailed notification is released. For reference, UPSC notified 1,129 vacancies in 2024 and 979 vacancies in 2025.

Eligibility Criteria for UPSC Civil Services Exam 2026

As per the eligibility norms followed in previous years:

  • Candidates must hold a graduate degree from a recognized university.
  • Final-year students are also eligible to apply, provided they submit proof of qualification before the Main Examination.
  • The age limit is 21 to 32 years, with age relaxation applicable for candidates belonging to reserved categories, as per government rules.

UPSC has clarified that the final eligibility conditions will be confirmed only after the official notification is published.

Three-Stage Selection Process

The UPSC Civil Services selection process will be conducted in three stages:

  • Preliminary Examination (Objective Type)
  • Main Examination (Descriptive Written Exam)
  • Personality Test / Interview

Candidates must qualify each stage to progress to the next.

Comparison With Previous Years

In 2025, the UPSC released the Civil Services notification on January 22, and recruitment was conducted for 979 posts. The interview process for the 2025 cycle is currently underway following the completion of prelims and mains examinations.

Candidates who could not clear the exam in the previous cycle are eligible to apply again, subject to age and attempt limits.

Aspirants Await Final Notification

UPSC aspirants across the country are closely monitoring the commission’s website for the release of the official advertisement. The commission has assured that all updates and detailed instructions will be made available on upsc.gov.in once the notification is published.
