Lucknow: The government led by Yogi Adityanath is taking consistent steps to strengthen sports infrastructure and promote athletes across the state. In a major boost to sports development, Uttar Pradesh is set to get five new sports stadiums, aiming to provide world-class facilities at the district level.
The initiative is part of the state’s broader strategy to improve sports infrastructure and nurture young talent across regions.
Expansion of Sports Infrastructure Across Uttar Pradesh
At present, 84 sports stadiums are operational across 71 districts of Uttar Pradesh. With the addition of five new stadiums, the network of sports infrastructure in the state is expected to expand significantly.
The new stadiums are being constructed in:
- Ghazipur (new stadium – phase II)
- Chandauli
- Hapur
- Sambhal
- Shamli
These projects aim to ensure that athletes receive better training facilities within their own districts.
Construction Progress of New Stadiums
The construction work of these stadiums is progressing at different stages:
- Ghazipur stadium is nearly 99.9% complete, with minor issues still being resolved
- Hapur stadium is approximately 70% complete
- Sambhal stadium construction is around 26% complete
- Shamli stadium work has already begun
- Chandauli stadium is currently under the tendering process
Except Ghazipur, all other stadium projects were approved in the financial year 2025–26. The government plans to inaugurate these facilities once construction and handover are completed.
Focus on World-Class Sports Facilities
The state government is not only focusing on stadium construction but also on developing comprehensive sports infrastructure. Facilities being developed include:
- Multipurpose indoor halls
- Swimming pools
- Badminton and tennis courts
- Volleyball courts
- Gyms and fitness centers
- Hockey and football grounds
- Athletics tracks
These facilities are aimed at providing athletes with professional-level training environments.
Strengthening Grassroots Talent in the State
Yogi Adityanath has emphasized that improving sports infrastructure will help in identifying and nurturing talent from rural and urban areas alike.
The government believes that better facilities will:
- Improve athlete performance
- Encourage youth participation in sports
- Enhance preparation for national and international competitions
- Strengthen Uttar Pradesh’s presence in competitive sports
Officials Highlight Long-Term Vision for Sports Development
According to Uttar Pradesh Sports Director Dr. R.P. Singh, the state is working continuously to strengthen sports infrastructure under the guidance of the Chief Minister.
He stated that once the new stadiums become operational, athletes will have access to modern training facilities in their own districts, which will significantly improve their performance at higher levels of competition.
The construction of five new sports stadiums marks a significant step in Uttar Pradesh’s mission to develop a strong sports ecosystem. With improved infrastructure and modern facilities, the state aims to empower young athletes and strengthen its presence in national and international sports arenas.
